Follow your Dr's advice. You can also get acupuncture or use auricular

magnet beads. You can tape them into your ear. Drink plenty of water,

green tea and eat plenty of blueberries.

Walk at least 30 minutes a day. In fresh air.

Talk to your doctor if you can take benadryl for some days until Ambien is

gone from your system, benadryl makes you sleepy if you take it at night,

also, there is some teas, made with different plants and flowers that makes

you sleepy, they are in any grosery store.

I have a client that is coming off of adavan. She has been researching and had

alot of result with a company out of Canada called Point of Return. See what

you think. They have research to back it up and also have a slow plan to do it

naturally plus know all the vitamin and herbal interactions. They sound like a

Look into an amino acid called gaba. It makes you feel as if you've taken a

benzodiazepine or a mild muscle relaxer and it inhibits the autonomic rapid

response that usually follows withdrawal situations. Its relatively

affordable ( about 20.00 ) and its is one of the best things I've discovered

in my quest for wellness.

Hi there. I have been on Ambien for a few years. Bad back and knees. I can't

sleep at night without help. But when I run out of Ambien I go with TylenolPM

or ExcedrinPM---it helps me sleep and I dont worry about side affects. Hope this

helps.

Ambien is pure trouble all the way around. I am glad you are getting off

of that drug.

 

Your Dr. should be able to help with a substitute. But in my

Granddaughter's case, most

of the Dr.s are a little ignorant on the drug subjects. They blindly

prescribe it, but do not

know the side effects or the withdrawal effects.

 

As hummingbird said, over the counter with Tylenol PM and Excedrin PM

does the job.

Cold turkey is often the best route when it comes to prescription drugs.  There

are time periods involved in any kind of lifestyle change that one must endure. 

But there are things to help ease the discomfort.

 

Epsom salt baths before bed, warm/hot water are extremely helpful both for the

magnesium content that most prescriptions rob your body of, as well as highly

effective relaxation.

 

Valarian in liquid form is often available for children to help calm them.  It

is effective.  Not like a drug, but for people who are clean to begin with, we

can notice the effect very readily.

 

If you're desperate, kava kava prepared correctly can also help this transition,

but try to avoid these last two suggestions, or only use them with the

understanding they are temporary to help get you thru.

 

There are also tons of relaxing music CDs out that really do work, both in music

form, and in generated sound waves...entraining the brain frequencies down into

the delta/theta band to help relax the brain/mind and body.  They work.

I think you have to taper off with ambien.  Since you are on other medicine too,

speak to your doctor and pharmacist.  My mother in law stopped ambien right

away, and had problems.  It needs to be tapered off.  Definitely speak with a

pharmacist.  Best wishes.

My late husband was put on beta blockers by the doctors at the VA

hospital. There was no follow up on what these prescription drugs

were doing to him. Six months later, he could hardly breathe or move

around, his pulse rate was 27. I took him to the VA emergency room.

He was admitted and taken off all the drugs. His pulse rate shot up

to 82 and he had a heart attack. The doctor told me that he had the

heart attack because he had been taken off the drugs so suddenly, but

that he had to stop taking them.

Cold turkey is not recommended with many psychotropic and similar medicines.

Tapering down is the safe and sane way to detox from most dependant items.

This tapering down can be supplement with your chosen item or method of

withdrawal aide.

There are merits to many modalities.

I would recommend speaking with your physician and asking him to taper your

dosage down. When taking any psychotropic medication it is extremely important

that you consult your doctor and perform your own research in regard to the

potential side effects. While one's ultimate goal may be to rid their system of

specific medications there are appropriate methods to follow in order to reach

that goal and stopping cold turkey is not an option with most of these types of

medications. Ambien is a sedative and anyone who takes it for an extended amount

of time will become tissue dependent, therefore you will do more harm than good

by placing your body in a state of withdrawal by the removal of the drug.

I don't know what alternatives you have tried but the following may help you

sleep a little better at night:

 

1. Cut out caffeine products during the day

2. Try deep breathing and/or meditation before bed.

3. Try not to get on the computer or watch TV about an hour before bed. The

absence of light activates tryptophan which is a natural sleep aid in our bodies

4. Valerian root extract in a small cup of juice about 45 minutes before bed may

help you relax and valerian does not have any negative side effects as do other

sleep aids.

5. Melatonin is also widely used as a natural sleep aid. I have heard mixed

reviews that it works for some and not for others.

6. Finally, (this seems like common sense but it is very difficult for me to do

as I am a student, teacher and parent) try to maintain a set sleeping schedule

so your body knows when to prepare for sleep.

 

I have difficulty with sleeping as well, however I have really tried not to

resort to prescription medications. When coming off of any prescription sleep

aid it is important to remember that it does take time for our bodies to adjust

to the absence of the drug.

 

I don't take advice from just anyone so just to let you know I am a chemical

dependency counselor and I am working on my Masters in Rehabilitation and

Addictions.

To withdraw from Ambien or any other drug may be simple or difficult,

depending on the individual, the length of time that the body has had to

" adjust " to the chemicals, etc.

 

It can be dangrous just to " cut off " any chemical your body has

adjusted to.

 

One method that I have used successfully is to cut the meds in half for

at least a week. If no serious flu type symptoms or other withdrawal

symptoms have appeared, cut in half again for another week, then cut out

if no problems in this second stage.

 

If problems appear during any stage, go back to where there is no

problem, and stay on that dosage for a short time, then cut back by

1/4th or less. The idea is to find a level where the withdrawal is not

severe, and slowly overcome it.

I have just read that Ambien is a sleep aid, and since you are on that, and it

is a prescription medication, the only advice is to be in constant consultation

with your doctor.

 

There is a supplement that you can get from your health food store (depending on

where you live) called melatonin. It is something our brain produces naturally,

and as we age, our brains produce less and less of it, hence that is why babies

and children sleep so much.

 

I have used it in the past, and it works very effectively and unless you take

too much of it, you don't feel groggy the next day.

 

I think if I were in your shoes, I would start small with this and cut back on

the Ambien at the same time, however, please please please know that you MUST do

this under the doctor's supervision. There is a possibility for a bad

interaction between the two things. Usually what I know of people on

anti-depressants, they have to cut it back in increments of 1/4 and be on the

modified (reduced) dose for a few weeks before reducing it again by 1/4. I know

nothing of sleep medication so can't suggest strongly enough that you talk to

your doctor and if you are seeing someone such as a homeopath and naturopath,

that your doctor and your other health care provider are aware of the fact that

you are seeing someone else and what they are giving you. Otherwise their

prescriptions can interact with each other in disastrous ways. Honesty and

being upfront are key to your healthcare.

 

If you can find a homeopathic doctor, what they can often do is convert your

prescription to a more natural remedy but as I said, you will have to be weaned

off of the Ambien SLOWLY and safely.

 

It would not surprise me if your doctor recommends cutting back your dosage in

increments of 1/4. Let us all know what your doctor says.
