Guest guest
Hiya Wendy, How are you? Thank You for responding to my Post. As for your question - I have tried the Atkins diet, and I have read on it, and now the new findings on the health and out come is heart disease, high colestoral (sp). Eating too much of anything is not good. The Atkins is more of a Protein diet - you can NOT eat much fruit, some veggies ( due to the sugars and startches in them) - it is " MOSTLY " a cheese and meat diet. I have researched it, and bought all the books. I am not saying the diet is not good for anyone - but for me it is not a good diet at all! ( My opinion). I tried Slim Fast too, and that is a AWEFUL diet - it is NOTHING but SUGARS, and I was finding I was starving more, and that even included the Atkins diet - I felt starved, and I got off both diets. Espically when I heard the risks of atkins, as I typed above there. Plus my neighbor her daughter was on it, and she did the atkins strictly for 2 straight weeks, and 1 weeks off, and again 2 weeks and off 1 - I just seen her over christmas and she is as heavy as I am and she could of stopped the atkins, but that diet seems to be once you do it you it is your way of life at that point, and I do not want a diet like that. Some people may do it - and I comend them for it , but i will never put myself at risk for heart disease - that is how Dr. Atkins died doing his own diet - I seen that on health watch on the news, and his wife spoke on CNN on how he died - She put forth her info that the diet is NOT by any means a Way of life - and it is not good for EVERYONE.... So THat is why I WILL NEVER EVER try it again or recommend it to anyone that I know. Please don't take offense to that - i am just putting forth my opinion. Thank You, Amber Schwarz
Guest guest
Amber – You should buy the book Dr. Atkins wrote, DANDR, and read it so you will understand food and how our body processes food. If you felt like you were starving on Atkins, you weren’t following the diet properly. The Atkins Diet has very little risk – it has been around for over 30 years and the vast majority of the people that follow that way of eating report weight loss and great improvement in all tests given by their doctor – cholesterol, etc. I know many, many people who have followed the diet and cured their diabetes. Your neighbor’s daughter failed because Atkins is a way of eating you must stick with – you cannot go two weeks on, one week off which she proved with lack of weight loss, etc. Dr. Atkins did not die of heart disease. He died from complications of a slip and fall on the ice and a crushing brain injury. His body gained in excess of 50-80 pounds from the moment he was admitted to the hospital with the fall to the day he died and it was due to the medical procedures being done and edema from the meds. I saw the same interview Kind did with Dr. Atkins wife and she did not say anything at all about the Dr. dieing of heart disease brought on by his own diet. Far from it. The Atkins diet is not about meat and cheese. You can eat meat and cheese but the diet is about eating real food. Real food in the form of meat, nuts, salads, vegetables and fruit. You can have fruit on the Atkins diet; during the Induction Phase (first two weeks of the diet) no fruit is allowed but that is because you are trying to clean your system of built up sugar and carbs and move your body into a fat burning metabolism. Once you are through Induction and losing weight, fruit is allowed. When you understand how food is parlayed by your body, you will understand that eating fat and low carb together does nothing “bad” to your body or your heart. On the other hand, when so many “dieters” in this world try to have their cake and eat it, too, and eat low carb but then slip up and add high carb foods or processed foods to their diet – that is what causes the heart disease. Eating a diet high in carbs and fat is a heart attack waiting to happen. I lost 80 pounds on the Atkins Diet in the course of 8 months and I kept my carb level at 20 grams per day that entire time (this was me, the book will tell you to raise your carb level). Yes, I ate meat occasionally – chicken and some beef and quite a lot of fish – but the majority of my diet was vegetables and fruits. During those 8 months I credit the diet/way of eating with curing me of fibromyalgia and severe chronic clinical depression. If I had not gone on the Atkins Diet when I did and lost the weight, I would be dead now. No doubt in my mind. I brought my cholesterol down from 380 to 169 following Atkins. My blood sugar tests were finally normal, fasting and non-fasting. I was on a bowl full of meds before the diet that ranged from high blood pressure meds, to Metformin to Paxil to Zoloft to heavy narcotics for the Fibromyalgia, and within a few months had taken myself off of each and every one of them. I felt better than I had in years while eating low carb and following Atkins. Eating low carb/Atkins and seeing the resulting change for the better with myself, I have done years worth of research. I write regularly for three different low carb publications and I co-own and co-edit a monthly low carb newsletter that goes out to tens of thousands of people. Following the Atkins Diet and using what I have learned about diet, food and our bodies, for the last few years I have watched what kind of protein I eat and I stick to hormone free/antibiotic free chicken and beef. I eat red meat once in a great while – maybe once every month or two, and I eat chicken once or twice a week, maybe. I eat fish once or twice a week, maybe. I buy only organic eggs and eat eggs a couple of times a week. My meals are based on organic vegetables in the form of salads. I eat very little dairy, perhaps a piece of cheese a week or a serving of cottage cheese a week. I make sure the food I buy is totally organic and I would never touch any dairy product found in the regular grocery dairy case. I buy a lot of organic fruit each week and whereas sometimes I eat the fruit alone the majority of my fruit I juice and drink. So – you could say I follow the Atkins Diet – I prefer to call it a low carb way of life, and I eat 98% of my diet in vegetables, nuts and fruit and the other 2% is organic chicken, fish, beef and eggs. I suffer from PCOS and I have seen almost 100% of my symptoms reverse and fade by following a low carb way of life. I see an endocrinologist regularly because of the PCOS and diabetes which runs in my family, and when she first found out I was on the Atkins Diet her response to me was much like your email below. 8 months later, when she was able to look at me and look at the myriad of medical tests she ran on me during that time, the woman (who is a nationally renowned specialist in her field) told me that she now recommended the Atkins Diet to all of her diabetes patients and was amazed at the change for the better she had seen in some of her worst patients. During this 8 month period, I also saw another endocrinologist for a second opinion on a health matter and her first statement to me when she found out I was following the Atkins Diet was “Way to go girl, I say no carbs instead of low carb” She had been recommending the Atkins Diet to her patients for over ten years. You can’t think of the way you eat as a diet, you must think of it as a way of life. I’m fond of saying that sooner or later, one of these days, when a person wakes up and “gets it”, they realize what their body is, how it works and what must be done to fuel it properly and let it run at maximum efficiency. I am at my best when I eat the way I do now – very low carb, organic everything, heavy on fruits and vegetables, NO soda pop, NO processed foods what-so-ever and absolutely no, no, no sugar or anything white. Guest guest
Hello Wendy and Amber, I have read a post before from Doc, wherein he said that the Atkins diet is not optimum - I seem to recall this was due to the meat eating, and an unbalancing of nutrients. I forget the whole data as I'm not familiar with Atkins diet myself. You could search the archives? I know there was a discussion on it at the time and Doc definitely wasn't in agreement with this diet. love Lisa - Wendy Landes herbal remedies Monday, January 17, 2005 7:06 PM RE: Herbal Remedies - TO: WENDY LANDES Amber – You should buy the book Dr. Atkins wrote, DANDR, and read it so you will understand food and how our body processes food. Guest guest
Many of the people I've known that go on Atkins have made the mistake of staying on the Induction portion of the diet past the 10 days recommended. So many people never make the transition to the rest of the diet. That is not Atkins fault. There was gossip about him dying of heart problems, but they correct it in the news later. herbal remedies , " Wendy Landes " <WendyL@k...> wrote: > Amber - > > You should buy the book Dr. Atkins wrote, DANDR, and read it so you will > understand food and how our body processes food. Guest guest
Exactly. Even after spending a year with a nutritionist, it came down to cleansing, a good varied organic diet with mucho veggies and fruits, lots of pure water, and exercise. Everything else we're talking about here is about trying to recover from not doing that for so long plus combatting all the inpurities in the water, air, and food available to us. My gosh, how did things get so complicated? herbal remedies , " tempo33x " <tempo33x> wrote: > > > The Atkins or any other is just a temporary diet. >
