Guest guest Posted January 14, 2005 Report Share Posted January 14, 2005 Yes, this is the original Barley Formula: Put about half a cup of whole barley in a piece of muslin tie it loosely to allow for expansion place it in a pot containing 4 pints of water boil slowly for 6 1/2 hours with pot slightly vented so that steam can escape mix the formula using a ratio of: 15 oz barley water; 10 oz homogenised milk; 3 oz of corn syrup Notes: never use an aluminium cooking pot - stainless steel is best. Do not use this pot for anything else anymore - only for this barley. The amount of syrup can be varied according to taste. Barley water should turn very very pink and this will tell you it is the right consistency. You only use the barley water, not the barley itself. I found that the boiling has to be done VERY slowly or you won't have much water left - it took me a few times trying to get the hang of it on my stove :-) My son grew up on this formula, which he still drank as a "drink" until he was 3 1/2 years old. He's as strong as an ox, and extremely healthy!!! This is unusual for a Down's Syndrome boy, most of whom suffer many health problems. I didn't know Doc at the time, and wasn't aware of organic foods, or the soy problems. As my son had a dairy allergy, we substituted soy milk in this formula for the dairy milk. As I say, he's doing absolutely great. But we're in Europe, and the GM does not seem to be a problem here, so we might have been okay all along. Even so, since then I have heard of other possible problems with soy, so now we use our home-made almond milk. You don't need to worry about the syrup creating a "sweet-tooth". My son has NEVER been interested in sweets, and never had any until he started mixing with school aged kids. And unfortunately he's with his grandma every Sunday, who believed a child should be eating sweets, and tried to entice him frequently with sweets - so now he likes them!! :-( But, it definitely wasn't caused by the syrup in the formula, that's all I'm saying LOL BTW, as you can see, it doesn't say "pasteurized" milk, only "homogenised". Anyhow, have fun with this formula. I believe breast is best if the mom is on a correct diet, but if that’s not possible . . . I wonder what Doc has to offer on this. Nothing can beat the real home-made food - you then know exactly what goes in them, and can ensure a healthy balance. This formula below was designed specially for babies, to give them all the nutrients they need for a growing a healthy body. And ensuring organic ingredients would make this a wonderful formula for any baby. If your child a boy or girl? Reason I ask is that soy has the plant-equivalent of oestrogen in it, which is a female hormone. So soy is definitely not optimum for a boy. As I said, my son was raised on it, but that was before I knew about this. Now he still eats soy yoghurt, but no other soy products - I simply have not found a healthier replacement for soy yoghurt - he can't have dairy, and hates goats products. But as we are in Europe, the GM issue should not be a problem for us here. And he just looooves his yoghurt! We are working on optimizing his diet anyhow, and I started with optimizing his dinner. This is now well in progress. Part of the problem is that frequently even organic soy is genetically modified. But, the main problem is with the soy itself. Soy used to be grown to replenish fields that were depleted from other products. When they cut it, it was turned into silage for cattle (remember bovine - 4 stomachs). The good effects of Miso or fermented soy, such as soy sauce, became the " ideal " in how the companies who had all this excess soy on hand could be neatly turned into profit. The total amount of soy being used in oriental countries is relatively small. We Americans have to overdo everything! You'll find processed soy (flour, protein, you name it) in almost everything now and we're getting way too much of it. My nutritionist took me off it completely and now I that I've studied it, I understand why. I suggest the Barley formula. My friend's granddaughter was raised on it, is now 3-1/2, and is very healthy. She was given only natural sugars, lots of fruits and vegetables, and is rarely sick - even in daycare. However, instead of the corn syrup in the recipe below, our holistic nutritionist said to use organic honey instead. I believe they also used goat's milk rather than homogenized milk. Sage loved it. I have read many articles published by the Weston Price Foundation which turned me away from soy. My opinion is that if a person has a dairy allergy they can usually tolerate raw dairy (unpasteurized). I find that pasteurized dairy gives me some problems, but I do great with raw dairy. Although, I think homogenized is bad, too. It’s a formula from old Roman times, and they weren’t homogenizing then, so I think just raw would be fine. And there’s more data on it that after the child is a year old, you can use honey. I would use totally raw unheated honey. Corn syrup in the U.S. has lots of added sugar. (Note on raw honey: In the U.S., if it says “raw,” they still heat it once. Only buy it if it says something like “really raw” or “absolutely no heating.” I get mine from a co-op of farmers. Honey is the only food implicated in infant botulism. Since it is NOT essential for the nutrition of infants, parents and caregivers are reminded not to feed honey to infants less than one year of age. Honey should never be added to baby food or used on a soother to quiet a fussy or colicky baby. Concerned parents should discuss alternative methods for quieting their baby with their pediatrician or family doctor. Actually, it is illegal to sell it for human consumption. The dairies that do sell raw milk are required to label it for " animal consumption only " . My closest source is 5 hours away. The FDA always likes to scare us with stories of food poisoning, parasites, etc., but often, those stories leave out important facts, such as other things the peope involved were doing that was wrong. GRANTED - it is $5.99 for 1/2 gallon!!!! *swoones and drops to the floor* Twelve dollars for a gallon of milk is just asinine however - they aren't my cows....lol Regardless the crazy price...it is still raw milk. It appeared in the milk section about 2 months ago. I splurged and bought myself 1/2 gallon. It was sooooooo yummy!!! I was raised on raw milk and I hadn't had a glass of *real* milk since I moved to CA 15 years ago... I am able to get raw dairy from a local farmer. There is a website to find local chapters who sell raw milk, and there is also a website that you can order it from...it has to come frozen though. There are loop holes to the legality of selling raw dairy in some states. IT is too bad that it is illegal in some places, and I hope that changes in the future. Raw milk dropped out of the groceries here about 10-12 years ago. In Georgia and most of the surrounding states, I'm told it is illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption. At least I have not found any other sources that say otherwise. Cooked honey destroys the antibiotic properties of honey but not necessarily the botulism spores which are the danger here. Your all-raw honey would have self protective properties that would allow it to be used on babies. Just make sure of your source. You definitely do NOT want to use cooked honey on a baby. My kids had the all raw at a very early age with no problems whatsoever. This is not the first time I've heard of this "warning", and yet I've seen no solid science on the claim. The best baby formula out there is the Barley Formula that was posted a while back by another member. It doesn't get any better. My son Bryan (currently in India with the relief effort) was raised on the stuff and makes Schwartzennegger look anemic. :-) I can't praise this formula enough. I guess he needs all of those and more that are in this formula (see the link) http://www.naturesone.com/soy-ingredients.htm Is the one you suggest going to have all thos ingidients?
