Earlier, Potty training was discussed. I have a similar issue. My 8 year old boy and 6 year old girl are still wetting the bed (the boy much more often than the girl). My 4 year old boy occasionally wets the bed too, but seems to have it pretty well under control. We've tried waking them up to go the the bathroom at night and sometimes it works, but hubby and I are usually so worn out we don't wake up to do it. Guest guest Posted December 22, 2004 Report Share Posted December 22, 2004 Hi Mary, When I moved my daughter onto a " real bed " , the first thing I did for the brand new mattress was buy one of the plastic zip on covers for it. She only wet the bed a very small number of times, but boy, was I grateful for the cover when she did! Changing beds is not fun in the middle of the night, and when you have a wet mattress to deal with too, it's even worse. Anyway, that's one suggestion. The other is to limit beverages after a certain time in the evening, maybe a couple hrs before bedtime, or so. I would also be very careful of their diet. Have them stick to water and fresh juices. You can't really make up for tearing the body apart with sodas by having a little cornsilk tea here and there. Lastly, try not to make it a big deal for them. Try not to have them focused on what your reaction is going to be, but focused on what they need to do. This is a problem for them too, not just you. Tell them that you understand and that you know that they can work through this problem and if there's anything that you could do to help to let you know. There was a discussion on bedwetting on the group many months ago. You can search through the archives for the advice given at that time. Good luck!! That really does help with clean up. And they are not allowed to drink anything before bed time. When they do drink, it's usually water. Very rarely do we have juice, and then it is usually with a meal. We don't have soda at our house. Sometimes they get some when we visit other people though. Their meals are vegetarian with some milk and eggs in addition (several times a week, not every day). Molly, the 6 year old is only wetting about once or twice a week. Toby, the 8 year old seems to wet more often than he stays dry at night. They are both ashamed when they wet. Hubby and I congradulate them when they stay dry, and try not to make a big deal of the wet times, but it gets really old! Thanks for the suggestion! If you live in an older home or have any suspicion that this may be the problem, have their blood checked ASAP. I know it can be frustrating, especially since I'm sure you expected to be completely out of this phase by now!! LOL! Anyway, a couple other suggestions are to put them more in charge of this whole thing - when they wet the bed, teach them how to clean it up themselves so they can get back to bed without waking you. This may just be dragging the bedding to the bathroom until it can be taken care of in the morning and sleeping in a sleeping bag. Ideally it would be making the bed themselves. Also teach them to wash their own bedding. This isn't a punishment, but just so they can be in control of SOMETHING when it comes to this whole thing. They're definitely old enough to do these things. OK, well good luck! This time will pass!!
