Hello Teresa,

Having been a smoker for over 20 years and now 2 years nicotine free, I pretty much have an idea where your husband is at this point. I would have to say, from my own experience, this is a critical time for your husband - this because he can lean either way at this point. The bad news is that it will not 'clear itself up' if he continues to smoke (and that means anything, be it a pipe or clove cigs) and will probably, nay, will just get worse with time. It is willpower that will win this war.

Okay, now for the good news. As I mentioned, your husband is on the fence right now and he is close enough that he can kick this scourge once and for all (though it is my belief that he should consider himself addicted to nicotine the rest of his life, long may it be!)

Now, beside determination, may I suggest a few juices to help curb the urge. First and foremost is orange juice, especially when he goes to light up. The two do not get along and that will definitely make the cig less palatable. Also, unsweetened grapefruit juice will help the same way. The thing is, this is not the magic wand. He must drink these vigilantly and even after he thinks he has beat it. At that point he may want to try carrot and celery juice to help cleanse the system (2 large carrots and 1 celery stalk).

These things helped me through the 'dark days' and I truly hope they will help your husband. Remember, do not allow the cig to be a reward for ANYTHING such as a good meal, sex or anything well done: that only serves to deify the smoke, and what we are trying to do is vilify it so to speak.

Best of luck and health to you both.

Hello,

My husband quit smoking before we were married, but on the evening of

our daughters arrival by emergency C section where she almost died and

I almost bled to death, hubby took up smoking again. Believe it or

not, a nurse gave him the cigerette to help him calm down. Hubby has

tried to quit again and again, but he is more addicted than he was

before we met. He smokes the camel lites, but when he gets down to 4

a day, he cannot get lower for very long. He might go one day

without, but he ends up smoking even more by the evening or next day.

Next thing, he is back to smoking heavily. If he tries the ultra

lites, he really smokes a lot of them. He sometimes uses some type

that are said to be all natural, and he has also bought some herbal

and even some with cloves.

He tried using the patch, but it gave him severe migraines. He tried

the gum, but same thing. I bought the entire stock of some

homeopathic pills that I believe had lobelia in them. He used up all

25 boxes, but didn't kick the habit. He even told me that he doubled

and tripled the suggested amount. I don't know what to do. This big

strong man is under the control of a tiny, smelly, expensive drug

stick. If he goes without them, he can barely function. He also gets

downright cruel with his mood swings. I still cannot believe that

some folks still claim that they are not addictive. I would

appreciate any advice on the subject. I am really sick of his stinkin

habit. He is not allowed to smoke in our home or vehicles, but he

still stinks. He is also costing us a fortune, especially since he

puts his pack of cigs down at work, and someone always walks off with

them, so he has to buy more. He is always setting a goal such as " I

will stop smoking by Easter of next year " . It never happens! Help?

Teresa....my husband is 61 and smoked since he was 13 and up and quit, he had been trying and couldn't then one day went to the doctor....he had to have vascular surgery..he has a huge upside down like Y thing from below his chest and down both groans, my husband went thru much in this surgery,,bad stuff....Doctor told him his trouble started when he was a young man from mostly smokeing and bad diet....you couldn't pay my husband to smoke again...while I was in surgery waiting room, I talk ed to many whose loved one's couldn't have surgery for a problem because of the smokeing they had done, so cause of this there was the strong possibily they would die....scary situation....so if one does need surgery for something lets say the heart, well if they need by pass's or other things pertaining to the heart, it can't be done because of the build up of what cigarette smoke produced in them...I'm a smoker myself and am trying to quit seriously because I am thin and if I needed surgery

that'd be all she wrote for me lol....lots to think about....just go set in a surgery waitng room and talk to people, it's an eye opener and an't no commercial.....brendateresa <tmbdobie wrote:

Hello,

Not sure of how your husband proposes to quit, but I'm going strong

and smoke free now for a month and a half. With a combination of

willpower, the nicotine patch, and gum, I hope to have won my battle.

There are various aids out there to achieve that succesful quit.

Being a smoker for 17 years, a pack a day, any one can do it....Good

luck to your husband...

After following this group, and learning daily to live a natural,

healthy lifestyle, I am determined to improve in my overall health...

Thanks to a very informative group, and after listening to Doc's

lecture, I will be sending off my releave and waiver form soon..

I quit smoking when I had Brock but once I started back at work I was so stressed I took up the nasty habit again. Only one a day! But I find on the days I don't smoke that one I get an aweful headache. January is going to be the month to quit the nasty habit once and for all. I need to find better stress relievers.

Thank-you for all of the replys. Hubby really wants to quit smoking,

but he gets discourage more and more each time he tries and fails.

Part of it is the addiction, but part is also habit.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get over the actual nicotine

withdrawals?

Hi Teresa,

I have been a member here for 3 yrs I think, I don`t post often but

I do read the posts, I really felt a need to answer your post. I was

a smoker for 50 yrs, I got so tired of the coughing, being on a

nebulizer, smelly hair and clothes. I really wanted to quit so bad.

I told myself for about 2 mos that I wanted to quit and all the

reasons both pro and cons. The Dr had given me samples of the

Nicatrol Inhaler, at 5:00 in the aft of a snow storm, I told myself

that when that cig I was smoking was gone, it was going to be my last

one. The inhaler holds a cartridge with 4mg of nicotene, so you have

a choice of how much nicotene you want to inhale, I would make mine

last up to 3 days. One thing with the patches is that you sometimes

get more than you actually need. The inhaler is for those cravings,

that can lead you to picking up a cig. I am now smoke free for this

amt of time.

10 mos, 2 wk, 5 da, 8 hr, 32 min. I have not smoked 9730 cig. I

have saved $1698.01, and life saved 4w, 5 da, 18 h, 50 sec.

I also belong to a Quit Smoking Support Group, we have a large

membership and not one person is left without someone to talk with.

I would hope you print this off and show your hubby and I wish the

best health for him.
