Can anyone recommend a good book to start out with?

one that gives basic knowledge, ie, what to use, when to us it, how

to use it, how to make it etc.

I would be grateful for any recommndations.

thx.

In my experience so far, it seems to take several herbals to get

complete information. But, there is one book I've come across lately

that I will highly recommend. " The scientific Validation of Herbal

Medicine " by Daniel B. Mowrey, Ph.D. - " How to remedy and prevent

disease with herbs, Vitamins, Minerals and other nutrients. He

documented medical and pharmaceutial research from around the world

and compared their findings to documented folk medicine. He lists

all of the journals/articles cited for each section. The books gives

you contraindications and a complete rundown on each herb used for

the illness. I wish it did better job of listing the dosages, but

those can be found in other sources. It does list dosages for

vitamins and indictes whether the herb was taken as a capsule, tea,

tincture, etc.

I would be interested in knowing of any herbals that anyone would

recommend.

I've always been under the impression that Rosemary Gladstar's work was pretty

well-known and/or ubiquitous (although I've never seen anyone here reference

them,

so maybe not), however, not very scientific. Also Michael Tierra's _The Way of

Herbs_ is another one I've found useful. It's very textbook in style, and he

actually does use it as a text in his school's herbal correspondence courses.

I'll check out the books you mentioned, as I'm always looking to expand my

collection.

Thank you. There are so many and I've never found one that I

consider to be really complete and also include dosages. It is also

difficult to find one that includes non-herb ingredients. I'm

thinking about creating a searchable database so I can combine all

the information into one place.
