Guest guest
Ok, In this situation I would go to the bathroom stand in front of the mirror and look myself in to the eyes. I would look deep inside and ask myself to regroup, take a deep breath and promise myself I will take care first of myself. That way I would be able to take care of my kids and my husband if he deserves that. You have to be honest to yourself looking into the your own eyes and answer questions like: Can I do better with less pain, can I be calm and express my wishes and my needs instead to fulfill everybody's wishes. Also be affirmative to yourself, make sure you look yourself and tell that you can do things, tell yourself how beautiful being you are, how happy you should be because of that, and how happy people around you should be because of that. After that you will go out with much more energy and wish to drink cup of tea first and go from there. Regards and Hugs JasminaDeana <squeekyme wrote: I feel like my world is whurling around me. Guest guest
Deana, you need a few hours by yourself. Can it be done? I get like that --feel like screaming "Calgon, take me away!" and well, nothing like hubby having a day off, he baby-sits and I go to the bookstore and browse, to the Health Food Store, browse and smell what's cooking (they have a small diner too) and I feel like a million bucks and that rejuvenation can last for up to three weeks. So I think every three weeks for me...oh yeah, a good night of sound sleep after going to bed at dark, yep, that completes a perfect stress free day and it is like I am the old me. Guest guest
Sounds like Cabin Fever. I don't think there's an herb for that. Well, there is, but it's illegal. Whatever you do, don't let anyone - lay or professional - tell you it's a mental problem. It is NOT. It's a normal reaction to circumstances. I think it would be a mental problem if it didn't affect you that way if you expected more. Several little kids? They say if you get out more......but...... Guest guest
Hi Deana Sounds as though you are suffering from STRESS and have the beginnings of a problem with your immune system. Do you get enough sleep? A woman NEEDS at least 8 hours per night of solid sleep; if you are not getting sufficient sleep then things start to go wrong. Are you noise sensitive? e.g. sensitive to the radio or vacuum cleaner etc. I suggest that : - 1.) You look hard at your sleep patterns and see that you are getting sufficient sleep 2.) Try to ensure that you boost your immune system by eating good quality fish, meat, fruit and vegetables and ensure that you get enough fat in your diet e.g. 1 table spoon of olive oil can be added to cooked oatmeal and also can be taken from a spoon about 3 times per day; this also aids in prevention of CANDIDA, which also causes tiredness etc. 3. ) Try to get some quality time for yourself during the course of each day ( not easy with a home and a family to care for) 4) Try and get some fresh air and plenty of daylight everyday. If you are reading a book, try to sit near a window so that you can get as much natural light as possible. If this is not possible (like me) then it is possible to use 'daylight' lamps that are available for florescent fittings or the specially designed S.A.D. lamps (these are rather costly but effective) 5.) Try to ensure that the house is properly ventilated throughout each day. Night time can be difficult but if (when you are not needing your privacy) you leave your bedroom door open Air will be able to circulate around the room and ensure that you are not breathing in stale air. This together with 4 above will encourage proper oxygenation of the brain and help to reduce fatigue. If you feel angry taking a brisk walk will reduce your stress and help you to cope better. I hope this helps Marion ---- herbal remedies 11/26/04 17:10:59 herbal remedies Herbal Remedies - life? I feel like my world is whurling around me. Guest guest
Sure would be nice if all women were blessed with husbands like yours. My DH never helped with kids nor house. When I was a young 20 year old mother of two toddlers we lived in the country, I had no phone, no one had computers therefore no Internet friends, I had no transportation, no close neighbors or family. One year I got to go to town twice ... One time being on Jan first and the other was in July. He would bring the groceries home as he came in from work. I would have loved being able to go to the grocery store. I thought I would go crazy and once I persuaded DH to move to town I was not about to be caught in that situation again. After our son was grown and married, I did move back to the country but DH made a lot of promises to get me out here and he has kept them. One of which is: I have a car that runs, with plenty of gas in the tank and I go when and where I want too. DH is 68 years old now and realizes how much he missed when he was young by being so selfish and spending all his off time with his 'Buds' and none with me and the boys. Now, he is trying to build a relationship with his son and spends as much time as he can with our grandson. Problem is his health is gone and he can't do the things with them that he could have done when our son was growing up. I am no longer bitter but I do have flash backs when I hear/read about certain situations, i.e., "Anyone else have this or is it just part of having kids and a husband that push you beyond your limits when you don;t even know what those limits are?" Sorry if this reply is considered out of line. I don't have any suggestions but will keep Deana and her family in my prayers. Flo <fgarig wrote: Deana, you need a few hours by yourself. Guest guest
Thank you - Marion. You are wise. I do not get much sleep and havent since our recent child of 9months was 3 months gestation in the womb. I have not had more then 2 hours of sleep yet since then without being woke up. On total I get about 4to5 hours of sleep each night counting all the wake ups. I am usually in bed between 8and 9 pm my 9 month old still seems to have to nurse throughout the night and wakes when I leave the room. I have EXTREME noise sensitivity and light sensitivity. I am feeling something bad going on inside.. one I know I dont take ANY time for me. Last night after i read your email i ran myself a bath as soon as baby went to sleep and put some Antiviral(herbal) essential oil in the bath and soaked . I think i got about 12 mins in before my 7yr old came in and just had to put her feet in the water and sit and chat. Then we went downstairs and made some Detox tea. I was feeling still quite out of sorts and took some vitamins and a piece of toast too. Then of course baby woke and needed me to put him back to sleep so i didnt get to drink my tea quite then. 10 mins later when I got him back to sleep i came out to drink my tea and of course he woke again . i did this two more times before i finally said screw it and went to bed. WELCOME to my daily life. I dont get privacy. EVER And when I try to get some my kids give me a guilt trip that I dont spend enough time with them I keep telling myself to get out and walk i did all this before little one came - everything changes with a baby and you think by my 4th I would have it all figured out. I feel myself getting weaker everyday. hugs and thx for all advice from everyone. Guest guest
Deana~ I have BTDT. I have 8 children and know Exactly how you feel! The first few months of a baby's life are not at All easy for some of us moms. Have you tried co-sleeping with your youngest? For me, that was the ONLY way I was able to get adequate sleep. For some babies you have to do whatever you can to get as much rest as you can... I call it " Survival Mode " . ;-) I cut out all outside activities (no taking kids anywhere~ that's what Daddy is for), no unnecessary trips out of the house (but a few well planned trips without kids (except the nursing baby, who I always carried in a sling when out), eating regularly, taking vitamins & other supplements regularly, delegating responsibilities to the older kids (as much as is possible), saying No when people ask for favors, learning how to nurse at the computer so I could keep in touch with friends on message boards so as to not feel so isolated... etc. If you don't take care of yourself NOW, you won't be any good to your kids Or your husband. This is important. Take little steps to start changing some things in your household to make it easier on you. Guilt is part of PPD, and it's Not healthy. Don't let your kids make you feel guilty. Have you talked to your husband about how you're feeling? Do you ask him to help you with things? (I'm mentioning this one because my husband is a Great help around the house... IF I ask. Otherwise he just doesn't seem to see what needs to be done... lol) The last time I had PPD, I had been in major denial that something was wrong (by this time my youngest was 5 months old)... then I had a conversation with a naturopathic doctor and told him what was going on. He flat out said that if I was eating the typical American diet, I was Sadly lacking in the " good " fats. The body needs the good fats to make proper hormone balances, as well as feed the thyroid (which is probably sluggish since you had your baby less than a year ago). One excellent source of the good fats is Virgin Coconut Oil. I immediately bought a jar and added it to my diet (some cook with it, others just eat it straight out of the jar~ 3.5- 4 Tbsps per day) Within one month, my hormones were back in alignment and the PPD symptoms were gone. I felt like a human being again! (aside from lack of sleep ;-) lol... although the VCO helped that too.) My baby hadn't been growing very well either, but within 2 months, she put on 3 pounds! and within the next two months she put on 2 more pounds. :-) (I get my VCO from Tropical Traditions, but there are other good brands out there too. Just make sure it's Virgin Coconut Oil, not processed.) I do so understand those overwhelming feelings and the stress and pressures of having little ones demanding every second of your day.... But you're not alone! Feel free to email me directly if you'd like to talk more~ Jan G. SAHM of 8, breastfeeding advocate (jgonz)
Guest guest
And I, in the middle of the holidays, am moving a househould *and* office to Florida for the winter....what do I take and what do I leave? what do I need for the business?....repairing hurricane damage from Frances and Jeanne from 1000 miles away....also furnishing the house (which I've only seen one time at the closing) and building a pool....am awaking most nights with "All I Need is a Miracle!" song running through my head.... Relax....accept that all will not be perfect, but all will be fixable. And that others are in your situation and feel for you.... Sharyn RICHARD L HOHLER [kat964] I too am going through a funky period right now. I am depressed and currently nothing is going right. It seems really strange to tell you that I am depressed as most people are able to "pull themselves up by the boot straps and go on" in my family it is a way of life. I really don't want to be this way, but the ladies are right. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and also enough light. Sunlight is the best but even the stores with the overhead lighting helps some. We did have some sun today and it helped some plus I worked on a few blends for the flea market I will be setting up at in about 2 weeks. Guest guest
Amongst getting three naps in yesterday and finally a pretty good nights sleep. baby didnt seem to wake as much today but my body aches still woke me up alot. I went to our local food health store and picked up some Blue Cohosh from solaray and some Female Hormone blend sp-7c which has black cohosh, dong quai, passion flower , red rasberry leaf, fenugreek, licorice, cramp bark, chamomile, saw palmetto, wild yam, and kelp in it. Since i can not seem to find all the bulk ingredients to make docs i thought this was a good choice Today i started taking these Blue Cohosh 500mg 2 pills - twice a day Female Hormone Blend SP- 7C 920mg 2 pills - twice a day Shatavari 500mg 1 pill - twice a day Omega-3 Norwegian Fish Oil 1000mg 1 pill - three times a day And started massaging my temples with my Lavendar essential oil. I fell real good today so far. I was also not eating enough i dont think for a nursing mother and up my meals. After figuring it out yesterday I was only consuming about 1100 calories a day and that didnt always include milk. I guess i make sure my kids are eating right but i wasnt paying too much attention to how much i should be eating while nursing. Hugs and much love Deana
Guest guest
Deana, I already sent you this info, but I thought I'd post it on the list to whoever else is interested in this subject. ;-) Here is a good site about herbs and breastfeeding~ http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/index.html It's pretty basic, but it shows that some of the herbs you picked up at the health food store aren't considered safe while breastfeeding. (Dong Quai, Saw Palmetto (which is typically a man's herb), the Cohoshes, Licorice, Wild Yam...) They have natural steroids and natural estrogens & /or progesterones in them. I honestly don't know if they will affect the baby (being 9 months old and eating some solids now), but be careful if you decide to continue with them. Just wanted to pass on that info. :-) Jan G. Guest guest
Hi Deana Below I have made comments and suggestions to help you to cope; I do hope that they will be helpful to you. It is a sort of DO’S and DON'TS list but I hope that you will try to ‘listen’ to what I am trying to say to you as it important for your LIFE and your relationships between you and EVERY member of your family. You need help and fast or you will be heading for a nervous breakdown. Do you have somewhere safe that your children can go to for a few hours per day? 1. A relative may be who can give you a helping hand for about 3-6 months in order to help you rest as much as possible so that you can heal? 2. A friend who can take the children to school and bring them home again so that you can get at least an extra half-hour per day without them all clamouring for attention You are suffering from sleep deprivation. Children ARE demanding and all children are different so there is no way that any parent can work things out as each child has their own needs. If I read what you are saying correctly, your baby is only 3 months old? Because you are not sleeping well and very tired, no matter how much you love your baby you may possibly feel some resentment towards this child because of his/her demands on you. Your baby is feeling insecure, because s/he is picking up your distress signals. You can help to reduce this feeling of insecurity by using a SAFE baby carrier e.g. - 1. One that allows you to be hands free and sits the baby from a sling so that s/he is carried around with your hip taking the weight 2. Or papoose style in a hammock on your back. This will help to prevent the fear the baby has of separation from you and will help you to do some tasks without having to stop and pick the child up. Don’t forget that your child has been tucked up in your womb, a close warm safe place where s/he can hear your heart beating and suddenly s/he is out in the world with a lot of unfamiliar space around them and so they become fearful and fretful because they cannot feel your presence neither can they hear your hear beating. When it is time for YOU to rest, put your child into the cot with a radio or CD playing soothing music; sometimes sounds from the womb can be played on a CD; ask your child clinic where you can obtain them, these can help to reasure your baby and may aid sleep. As long as your baby is fed, dry and at a comfortable temperature, just leave him/ her to settle in a darkened room. If s/he cries leave the baby to cry for about 10 minutes NO LONGER because that will make things worse as their feeling of insecurity will heighten and see if they will settle down to sleep. If baby still continues to cry, go in pick the child up, give a cuddle and put them back down again; s/he needs reassurance that you are around and that s/he is loved. I have recently been through this with my neighbour’s child as this was her first baby; Matthew started to settle down using this method. Having ONE child is no picnic having FOUR is shear hard work. Trying to organise time with a small baby is very difficult but not impossible. Look carefully at your household chores and see where you can make time savings. Prioritise tasks; e.g. the bedrooms do not have to be vacuumed every week neither do the windows need cleaning every week. To give you an example, because I am sick and disabled I NEED helpers to assist me in doing ALL daily chores; they cannot read my mind and they can only work for a few hours per day, I examined all that goes on in the household and analysed it so that it was split into essential chores for each day. So on Monday a.m. they clean the kitchen, make the beds and put the dirty laundry into the washing machine. Whilst a load of laundry is the washing they carry out another task e.g. cleaning the bathroom. This in my household takes 2 hours; obviously with four young children it will take much longer. Kitchen cleaning, cooking, laundry and bed making are priorities in your household, As far as ironing is concerned you can get away with not ironing: - 1. Towels, 2. Kitchen towels, 3. Underwear. The following items also as long as they are hung to dry as soon as possible: - 1. Trousers 2. Jeans 3. Skirts, 4. Sweat shirts, 5. Jog suits 6. T-shirts, (ALL knitted ’jersey’ cotton ‘T shirt’ material style). This ‘TO DO’ List you can do for every day; write it down and where possible try to stick to it, children like routine as it makes them feel safe. 1. Ration the amount of toys that are out to play with each day; if a child would like a different toy then they must put the others away first. 2. Get the children to help by picking up their toys and put them away without your help; if they don’t do it; - a. Don't shout & scream at them, b. Go away and leave them to put the toys away and come back in 10 minutes; if they have not done what you asked then don’t pick the toys up but explain that this is what will happen from now on c. Tell them LOVINGLY that if they do not put them away they will NOT be able to play with them the next time AND MEAN IT. d. don’t give in ‘for a quiet life’ it may be difficult at first but its will bring its rewards. When your children realise that you love them and mean what you say, they will do this task without a murmur; even a child as young as three-years of age will do this without complaint providing you are firm and loving. This will give you a lot more time to do the essential things. DO have some time for yourself and not feel guilty: It is far better for the children to have a little less time with you than a mom that is screaming at them because she cannot cope. A screaming parent causes fear in a child and undermineds their sense of security Always be with them at night to give them each a cuddle and a collective bedtime story before tucking them in. Providing they get LOTS of hugs and are INDIVIDUALLY TOLD that you love EACH of them EVERY day, you will be surprised at the way they WILL respond. Demanding attention is a sign of insecurity, providing you will give them: 1. LOVE 2. CUDDLES 3. PRAISE They will grow emotionally and also give you time as they will not be attention so seeking. Be rational, and realise that a new baby IS HARD WORK until such a time as mom and baby get into a routine and can work in with the rest of the family’s routine. Try taking the baby out for a walk in a nearby open space or park if possible every day whilst the other children are in school; both of you will benefit from being out of doors. Even if you have to sit on a park bench, your baby will probably go to sleep in his pram whilst being pushed and you can relax for a brief time in the fresh air. If you ARE feeling stress with your baby, why not join a mom’s and baby’s club so that you can: - a. Not be alone when under extreme stress b. meet new people c. swap ideas. Self-help is a very important part of therapy and can be VERY beneficial I do hope that this will help you, by all means write to me privately if you wish. Kindest regards Marion ---- herbal remedies 11/28/04 14:44:58 herbal remedies Re: Herbal Remedies - life? Thank you - Marion. You are wise. I do not get much sleep and havent since our recent child of 9months was 3 months gestation in the womb. I have not had more then 2 hours of sleep yet since then without being woke up. On total I get about 4to5 hours of sleep each night counting all the wake ups. I am usually in bed between 8and 9 pm my 9 month old still seems to have to nurse throughout the night and wakes when I leave the room.I have EXTREME noise sensitivity and light sensitivity.I am feeling something bad going on inside.. one I know I dont take ANY time for me. Then of course baby woke and needed me to put him back to sleep so i didnt get to drink my tea quite then.10 mins later when I got him back to sleep i came out to drink my tea and of course he woke again . i did this two more times before i finally said screw it and went to bed.WELCOME to my daily life.I dont get privacy. EVERAnd when I try to get some my kids give me a guilt trip that I dont spend enough time with themI keep telling myself to get out and walk i did all this before little one came - everything changes with a baby and you think by my 4th I would have it all figured out. I feel myself getting weaker everyday.hugs and thx for all advice from everyone.DeanaMarion Ghosh wrote:> Hi Deana > > Sounds as though you are suffering from *STRESS* and have the > beginnings of a problem with your immune system.> > Do you get enough sleep? *A woman NEEDS at least 8 hours per night of > solid sleep;* if you are not getting sufficient sleep then things > start to go wrong. > > Are you noise sensitive? e.g. sensitive to the radio or vacuum cleaner > etc.> > I suggest that : -> > 1.)
