I've come to this list because I am scared of what might happen to

me due to migraine headaches. I keep reading that people die of

these, and I am terrified!

I have had migraines since I was about 12, when I ate a lot of

caffiene and chocolate. The migraines were not regular, so I didn't

put it all together. When pregnant the first time, I developed

HORRIBLE migraines, mostly during the beginning and end of the

pregnancy, but also during it at times. The headaches went away

after the pregnancy, and also after I realized caffeine and

chocolate were triggers. I was migraine-free for a VERY long time.

Then about two years later I discovered that nitrates were causing

migraines. Fine, I had adopted a policy of " if it causes those

headaches, it's GONE! " so I gave up all nitrates. I was once again

headache-free for awhile. I had two more babies and experiences very

bad headaches during those pregnancies. With the aura and the

neurological problems (numbness, slurred speech, mental confusion..)

my doctor said he could not tell my migraine from a stroke. About

this time we also found out that I have polycystic ovaries and

insuline resistance, and my blood likes to clot based on a genetic

test they did...all these things together didn't set too well!

My endochrinologist put me on metformin to reverse PCOS (and it

has!) It brought down my high male hormones, high cholesterol, and

my higher risk of blood clots...I have the blood tests to show it.

However, migraines once again raised their ugly head.

During my third and final pregnancy I developed peripartum

cardiomyopathy and almost lost my life. This is a condition where

the body has an autoimmune reaction which is triggered by the

pregnancy, a virus, and most likely an underlying genetic

predisposition. The heart is attacked, and it enlarges, producing

heart failure. Shortly after the birth of the child the mother is in

grave danger of death from her weakened heart if the condition is

not caught and treated. MOST women will totally or almost totally

recover when properly treated...and I was placed on beta blockers

and an ace inhibitor. As the levels of these drugs were titrated up,

I had migraines. It seems that any kind of chemical change will

bring one on. One I got to a level where I stayed, the body adjusts

and I don't get migraines anymore.

I am doing fine now, almost totally recovered, but I seem to be in

some sort of perimenapause stage. My periods are shorter, I have

more mood issues and I can tell something is changing about my body.

I am 35, and you guessed it.....sometimes (though not in every

cycle) I get migraines before, during or just as my period is

ending. I also made the mistake of using nutrasweet during a recent

diet and got migraines while on that, as well as while I was

clearing it out of my system.

Okay, I told you all that so you would have some good background.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!! I want to find some way of

balancing my hormones and preventing these migraines. I don't have

them often, but with the advent of menstrual migraines now, I can't

control them anymore like I could when I just gave up a food. And

why does it seem that as soon as I remove some cause or trigger for

the migraines, it just makes up a NEW trigger???

I used herbs to help conceive my second child, (dong quai and chaste

tree) and I know these herbs created a profound difference in my

body and helped me conceive. Can someone help me with controlling

the headaches and finally getting my hormones in balance? I keep

reading about stroke and brain lesions from migraines and I get VERY

scared about it all!

Thanks for any help you can give me...

Hi Cara,

I don't know much about the issues about which you write, so I may be out of order, but Doc has a Female Formula in the files to balance the female hormones. You could check this out.

Also I would suggest that you ask for Doc's free information tape and listen to it.

love

My thyroid was checked a few months ago and it was just fine, and they keep

a fairly good eye on my blood chemistry because of the meds that I'm on.

It's just like my body doesn't like any sort of chemical change, and when I

remove a trigger after I figure out what it is then it decides to make

something ELSE a new trigger and I have to give that up, too. I told my

husband eventually I will just be on bread and water!
