Chemical that smells like raw onion??

I was out in my backyard this morning when I started smelling raw onion

in the air (I live in the suburbs)in a neighborhood. My eyes started

burning and watering and my nose too. I thought it was just me so I

sent hubby outside in the front and he smelled it too. We called the

police and they sent out the fire department but they couldn't find

anything except by the time they got there the smell had dissapated.

Also, the city was working on the sewers at each end of the street. Now

my throat is burning and I have a headache. Any ideas?
