Medical 'reps' ban begins

NEW STANFORD PLAN SAYS 'NO' TO

INDUSTRY GIFTS, GRATUITIES

The halls of Stanford University Hospital and Clinics will be

just a little bit quieter today, the first day of a new ban

on drug and device sales people bearing gifts, gratuities and

unsolicited advice.

 

Stanford's tough policy, similar to one adopted by Kaiser

Medical Group in late 2004, is designed to ease pressure

on doctors to prescribe certain medicines or implant certain

" WHAT THE POLICY SAYS

New rules take effect today.

 

" DOCTORS CANNOT:

- Accept personal gifts or services.

- Be paid for listening to sales talk, prescribing a medicine,

or attending a conference.

- Seek industry ghostwriters. Articles or speeches must disclose

financial interests in relevant company.

- Purchase drugs or medical equipment for Stanford if they have

any financial relationship with companies involved in contract

bidding.

 

" INDUSTRY CANNOT:

- Send sales representatives into patient or non-patient

care areas, unless they have an appointment.

- Directly fund meals and refreshments at educational events.

- Select students for scholarships. The School of Medicine

selects the student and the funds to the program, not the

student. "
