I wanted to post here too in case anyone had TMJ problems. Best, Sharon ************************************************************ Hi everyone, I just joined to post this one message so I apologize for not being familiar with your group. I have had TMJ pain for about 4 years on and off, sometimes excruciating. But my TMJ pain is completely gone now. I had read that TMJ is very common in women of childbearing age (which includes me) and because of that a hormonal aspect is suspected. I had also read a bit about the jaw structural problems, and had gotten mild relief from acupuncture. I had gone to a TMJ dentist and was considering whether to spend the 5-15k she said was probably needed to fix my problem. So, that is my history. In January, I started taking iodine supplements after reading how much good they can do for people with thyroid, breast, ovary, hormone, prostate and many other problems. I had joined the newly formed health group for iodine, http://health.iodine/ , and found great info and support there. The RDA for iodine is just 150mcg, but leading iodine researchers suggest that 12.5mg is probably what the body needs everyday. Many people take much more (25 - 100mg/day) for a period of months to get the body fully loaded with iodine. Needless to say, having a doctor guide you with that is best but finding an iodine-knowledgeable doctor to work with is not always easy. I had to start out slow because iodine can cause side effects, which I had. But by the time I worked up to about 3mg (a few weeks), I started to experience less TMJ and less back pain. Seven or so months later (and working up to taking 40mg iodine/day), I don't have any TMJ pain and a lot less back pain. Iodine is really known for balancing hormones, particularly for women who have estrogen dominance, and I can tell my hormones are much better. I know the TMJ structural issue is still there - I can feel how far my mouth won't open! But this really convinced me that in at least some cases, having a structural problem does not necessarily mean that there will be pain. In my case, getting my hormones balanced got rid of the pain. So, I wanted to share my story in case anyone out there could benefit from it. For more info on iodine, please check out the iodine group http://health.iodine/ . Also, the moderator of that group started a website to catalog all of the relevant iodine research at www.iodine4health.com . I have never seen research relating iodine and TMJ pain but I personally have felt the connection! Best wishes to you all, Sharon
