Note how the supposed cream of science the " New Scientist " has been drawn in to do the dirty bidding of the vested interest... Chris Gupta http://tinyurl.com/p62ao --------------------------- " the author of the article " is science writer in residence at the Novartis Foundation in London. " Novartis is a leading pharmaceutical company. Pharmaceutical companies and the science that blossoms from them don't like vitamins and mineralsat least unpatented vitamins and minerals. But I digress. Or maybe not. The New Scientist article was written by someone from the Novartis Foundation. You have taught me a new word - shill - I like it. Steve -------------- Steve, I highly doubt that they will respond let alone rise to the challenge. " When caught red handed they simply choose not to respond and hope to it will go away. Or they will do a character assassination as they did to Dr. Pauling. Imagine these rank armatures who could never approach the stature of Pauling and his understanding in chemistry telling others that they understand the chemistry and/or science better! That's like a child telling his father on how to earn a living.... These industry shills (prostitutes) are hardly scientists*! " Extracted from: All Vitamin C/Common Cold Studies Conducted Over The Past 60 Years ... Will put this challenge on my site shortly... Chris Gupta * " Science became an educated cadaver of thought, above which congregate expert players. If the encyclopedia of the ignorance of the acknowledged authorities in the history were to be published, it would number many fat volumes. Nothing will interest scientists anymore. They are like oxen which feed of fenced-off pasture. " Prof. Wlodzimierz Sedlak ----------------- Dear Barry, I read with interest your comments about antioxidants and vitamin C in the<http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/cgi-bin/http://www.newscientist.com/channel/\ health/mg19125631.500> New Scientist (The Antioxidant Myth) and The Scotsman (Supplements May Damage Health) on Thursday 3 rd August this week. However, they are scientifically unfounded. From my previous emails, you should be aware of the open challenge to any scientist willing to defend the " low dose hypothesis " for vitamin C. We issued this to discourage people from making unfounded claims against high doses. So far, no one has been willing or able to respond. Despite this, the evidence to date is consistent with massive doses of vitamin C having powerful beneficial effects, including protection from heart disease and treatment of cancer, shock, infections and toxins. Your public statements suggest you have evidence to the contrary. However, a plausible interpretation of the data is that the doses employed in clinical trials have been inadequate (too low and infrequent), particularly in the relatively oxidising internal environment of inflamed tissues in a person with these conditions. As you are aware, we recently demonstrated that the plasma excretion half-life of high doses of vitamin C is only 30 minutes. A direct implication is that all the clinical studies for the past 30-50 years have been flawed; they have used doses 10-100 times too small and involved subjects with effectively no increase in blood plasma levels of vitamin C ..[<http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/cgi-bin/http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perl\ serv?request=get-document & doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0020307>PLOS, 2005, 2(9),e307.] There is no evidence to support the idea that humans can get optimal levels of vitamin C without supplementation. Your statements seem to indicate that you might be prepared to respond to this challenge. I invite you and any combination of scientists of your choosing to produce a paper (up to 3000 words and 20 references) explaining why the low dose hypothesis is correct and refuting the claims for high, dynamic flow level doses. I will respond with a paper showing that your claims are illusionary and are not based on scientific fact. The papers will then be published together in the same journal. You should be aware that, when challenged publicly, both the Institute of Medicine in the US and the NIH have declined to respond or defend their recommendations. The last time I informed you by email that your ideas on low doses of vitamin C had been superseded, you did not reply. For this reason, I have decided to copy the present email to the publications you may have mislead with out-of-date statements, to other members of the press, and to interested parties. Your out-of-date ideas are able to survive because of the press blackout and exclusion of data on orthomolecular medicine from Medline.[<http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/cgi-bin/ http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/extract/333/7557/45-a>BMJ, 2006, Jul 1, 333(7557), 45.] If you accept the challenge, I look forward to reading your defence of the notion that high doses of vitamin C have been proven not to work. Please respond by email if you wish to accept the challenge.
