The Bioelectrical Basis for Healing

Electric currents applied to the skin could speed up the healing of

wounds. Although this process was observed 150 years ago, it has not

been investigated since.

Cells and tissues function as chemical batteries, with positive

potassium ions and negative chlorine ions flowing across membranes.

This creates electric field patterns across the body. Damaged tissue

causes a disruption in the battery, and the resulting altered field

attracts repair cells to the wounded area.

Scientists grew mouse cells and tissues (like corneas) in a lab, then

wounded them. Based on how they applied varying electrical fields to

the tissue samples, researchers found that they could stop or

accelerate the healing process.

The genes that make repair cells move from place to place can

apparently be influenced by electric fields. Electric fields can

deactivate genes known to prepare repair cells for migration, and

genes that halt the repair process.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

For a long time, I've been keenly interested in the work of Dr. Robert

Becker, who has studied how bioelectricity affects your body's natural

ability to heal itself. Becker used electrical currents to stimulate

cell regeneration in the damaged limbs of frogs and salamanders.

European researchers have taken Dr. Becker's work an important step

forward by demonstrating how the electrical fields and currents in

your tissues naturally heal wounds.

Becker has looked at both the curative abilities of electromagnetism,

which can heal without the dangerous side effects of chemotherapy,

radiation, and other mainstream medical procedures, and the potential

dangers of electromagnetic fields from sources such as household

appliances, power lines, and computers.

In his book The Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of

Life, Becker looks toward the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and

organs could be regenerated by this method, and details the story of

his struggle to conduct his ground-breaking research.

Biolectrics could lead to new understanding of evolution, acupuncture,

psychic phenomena, and healing. It is a vastly underutilized and

highly effective form of treatment.

Understanding of bioelectric fields is currently limited, but that

doesn't mean they don't exist. After all, CAT scans, PET scans, and

EMT scans are all designed to monitor the body's energies. There is

energy in all living creatures that has both electrical and magnetic

properties.

Some electrical fields alter your body's electrochemical activity by

changing the electrical activity of the central nervous system. Others

affect your body's magnetic field.

The key is that your body's systems are electrochemical. Living things

are a combination of both electrical and chemical reactions, and

electromagnetic signals are therefore critical in determining the

biochemical activity in the body.

Energy healing, therapeutic touch, polarity therapy, and Reiki are all

based on this principle: that every human being is composed of an

interlocking set of energies, including electrical and magnetic ones.
