Not only did studies show that this ancient Asian edible slashed cholesterol an average of 40 points in just 3 months, it did so without any side effects whatsoever. What's more, it was growing more and more widely available, for far less money than statin drugs - and without the need for a prescription... So what did those fat-cat drug executives do? They went to court... Their " grounds " for suing? Red yeast rice extract contains a natural form of lovastatin , the same active ingredient found in patented Mevacor, one of the major cholesterol drugs... The first time the drug companies took red yeast rice makers to court, however, the judge quite rightly threw the case out . But the pharmaceutical industry's deep pockets ensured that they'd be able to press the case until they got what they wanted. After appealing, they got their verdict... And with one stroke of the gavel, makers of safe, natural, un-patent-able red yeast rice extract suddenly found themselves in violation of Federal law. When the decision was handed down, the FDA was waiting in the wings. As though on command from the patent-drug cartel, they quickly banned red yeast rice extract from stores, mail-order sellers and all other sources - before its makers could regroup and file an appeal or suit of their own. posted by Jeff Sutherland @ 3:23 PM 0 comments links to this post

Guest guest
Does anyone on this list have any idea what's going on with Red Yeast Rice? I took the stuff, until recently, when I read a health letter that described Red Yeast Rice as a " poison. " that on one concerned about sound nutrition and health practices, would ever use. Now, I read this piece below, telling me a very different story. I should have kept the first article, so that I could refer readers to it. jp - califpacific Tuesday, June 27, 2006 12:34 AM Dr. Wright sounds off on Red Yeast Rice http://jeffsutherland.com/complementary/ Tuesday, June 20 High Cholesterol: Red Yeast Rice is Better, Safer, and Cheaper Dr. Wright sounds off on Red Yeast Rice (snip) We Made Changes Your email is all new. I believe I read the same article some time ago describing it as a poison. There is evidence that it depletes coq10 levels just as the statin drugs do as it works on the same liver enzymes as statins do. There is a lot of information on the subject, it seems that the Japanese discovered this product and it is present in Peking Duck and some of their other cuisine. Weil claims the product being marketed in the U.S. now under the same name is actually Policosanol. It is available in Canada, however after reading all the facts I'm not sure that I would ever advise anyone to use this supplmeent. Regards, JoAnn .. Red Yeast Rice & it's other names: Hung-chu, Hong-Qu, Cholestin, Cardio Results, Herbalin, Ruby Monascus Hi! Red Yeast Rice is commonly consumed in Asian countries as part of the traditional cuisine; in Peking Duck, for example. For centuries, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Since FDA has ruled that Cholestin (Red Yeast Rice) cannot be sold in the U.S.. unless you are purchasing it from a Canadian source, you are probably getting the substitute, " POLICOSANOL " , which is yet another so-called cholesterol lowering supplement. You can do your own research however, Dr. Weil relates in an article on his website that he believes that policosanol is totally ineffective, but then he leans towards statins which we know is obviously very questionable advice. Evidently the american company which was making red yeast rice switched to policosanl without any obvious indication or change in ingredient labeling. Red Yeast Rice (monascus purpureus Went) is made, quite simply, by fermenting red yeast on rice.A special process is used to isolate a higher concentration of the natural ingredient mevinolin. An extract of mevinolin can be purchased without a prescription as an over-the-counter dietary supplement. This substance is similar to the " statin " drugs, such as Zocor, Pravachol, and Lipitor, that doctors prescribe for high cholesterol. Red Yeast Rice (and " statin " drugs) block the action of an enzyme in the liver that triggers cholesterol production. " The " mevinolin " in Red Yeast Rice has been known to damage the liver and should not be taken if you even drink in moderation say, two alcoholicbeverages a day. Guest guest
JoAnn What a problem we face, with " for profit " nutritional supplement sales. There is a blizzard of information and misinformation that can only confuse and misdirect people who are trying to simply improve their health; and all because a bunch of peopla of weak character, can't put the health of the community above their desperate need to make " a lotta money. " Thanks, JoAnn, for your straightforward answers. jp - JoAnn Guest Wednesday, June 28, 2006 6:48 PM Re: Dr. Wright sounds off on Red Yeast Rice , " John Polifronio " <counterpnt wrote: > > Does anyone on this list have any idea what's going on with Red Yeast Rice? " > > Thanks, JoAnn, for your straightforward answers. > jp John, I think Dr. Lorraine Day calls it " The Maze of Alternative Medicine " in one of her recent videos and the founder of " Garden of life " supplements states that he was taking hundreds of dollars of supplements daily with absolutely no positive effects at all, before he started looking to organic foods for a solution to his IBS. Everybody goes through it I believe. Supplements can really be confusing, and to further confuse the issue the products themselves are sometimes not all that reliable, even the standardized ones, so I try to obtain them in the most natural form whenever possible in order to receive the most overall benefit. I question health professionals whenever possible and try to do my own research before starting a new supplement. The deception is unwarranted and there are times I wonder which is worst, alternative or allopathic in terms of deceptive literature and misleading information. We live in an age when one will say literally anything to promote their products and this makes it exceptionally hard to differentiate between and determine the worth of a particular product in terms of it's over all benefits. There are certain companies which I have learned to rely on and although this has changed somewhat over the years I have progressively learned which ones are reliable and which are not. Looking back I cannot believe some of the brands I relied on years ago and really wonder how I survived knowing so little about them. I firmly believe that our supplements are being greatly impacted by the introduction of GE foods into our foods supply. Although reliable companies try to avoid them, from what I've read I'm absolutely certain excessive GMO's are permeating our supplements. They say the drug companies control most of the vitamin C and that is extremely worrisome to me. For example, there are some people who take Natto for their cholesterol who wouldn't touch GMO soy at all. I have researched it to some extent, and found that this supplement is derived from GMO soy (natto is just another name for a particular kind of soybean)and we are rationing our GMO's off on the unsuspecting Japanese who do not fully realize the dangers of our GE soy and natto imports. I'm convinced the Natto supplements are just as contaminated as the rest of the gmo soy. .. Take for example oregano oil. Everyone advises taking it for candida, however if you do an acutual search on it or try to research it in alternative health books noone actually knows for certain the " source " of this herb. Some think it is actually a combination of marjoram and other middle eastern herbs and some will admit the origin is actually unknown, but people keep buying it. Interestingly enough, I find that most are just unaware and tend to buy into the conflict of information. :-) Confusing, yes! It is very confusing and becomes more so as we continue to delve into all the existing information. Does anyone really know or is it all trial and error. At any rate I'll go with alternative medicine over orthodox methods anyday! :-) Blessings, JoAnn If Bill Gates and Warren Buffet think they are going to wipe out disease and poverty in our lifetime with billions of dollars of drugs and a flourishing foundation, they are being deceived like everyone else!
