From the Texas legislature to the halls of Congress, former Rep. Tom

DeLay (R-Texas) combined ruthless ambition with corporate millions to

hijack American democracy and hand it over to the likes of the drug

industry and big oil.

 

DeLay's resignation this past Friday has a lot to do with our

relentless pressure on him, and we are delighted that he will no

longer be corrupting Congress. But his departure is just the first

step in our campaign to Clean Up Washington and rescue Congress from

the grip of lobbyists and special interests.

 

What better way to take the next step than with the brilliant

independent film " The Big Buy: Tom DeLay's Stolen Congress, " which

documents DeLay's rise to power and his rapid downfall?

 

Along with colleague organizations such as U.S. PIRG, League of Women

Voters, Common Cause and others, we are dubbing Tuesday, June 27,

" Clean Money Day. " To advance the cause of better, cleaner

government, we are enlisting hundreds of activists across the country

to host screenings of " The Big Buy " as a kickoff for a people-driven

campaign to reduce corruption and to call for public financing for

federal elections.

 

Can you help us celebrate DeLay's departure from Congress and take the

next step to Clean Up Washington by hosting a screening of the " The

Big Buy " for your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors?

If you are interested in hosting a screening of the film, either at

your home or a local venue such as a library or coffeehouse, you can

Below you will find helpful hints about signing up to be a host. We'll

also be in touch with you to talk more once you've signed up – we

appreciate the commitment you are making and want to make sure you

have everything you need to make your " Big Buy " screening a success.

(And don't worry, if you would like to host a screening but can't do

it on the 27th, we welcome and encourage you to do it on any other

date in the end of June or the beginning of July that works for you –

you can pick any date you wish when you sign up.)

Steps to Sign Up

 

1) Click on the sign up link provided in this email (above or below)

to host a " Big Buy " party, and create a personal password to enter the

system

 

2) Select a date – we recommend June 27, but if you can't do it on

that day, choose another, along with a time for your " Big Buy "

screening party.

 

3) Make your selections about the event (unless you already have a

full house of invitees in mind, we recommend allowing the event to be

open, and requesting RSVPs).

 

4) Leave the ticket price at free – when you draft a description of

your event at the bottom of the form, let people know that donations

to Public Citizen's Clean Up Washington campaign are appreciated,

though certainly not required (we'll give you more information if you

would like to support the Clean Up Washington campaign with your

screening party).

 

5) Fill out the rest of the information – it's all pretty

straightforward. Leave Public Citizen's Corruption Watchdogs as a host

organization.

 

6) You can purchase your own copy of " The Big Buy " through this

website for a special, reduced price of $14.95. (Through special

arrangement $5 of this price will go to Public Citizen – so you are

supporting our work simply by hosting the screening and getting a copy

of the film.)
