Matthew Rothschild | Guffaws for Bush's Immigration Speech

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706A.shtml

" It's painful to watch Bush give a speech, and his immigration address

was no exception, " Matthew Rothschild writes. " Hell, it was hard not to

break out into guffaws when he said, 'We have enough Guard forces to

win the war on terror, to respond to natural disasters, and to help

secure our borders.' "

Howard Zinn on Fixing What's Wrong

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706B.shtml

In an interview conducted by Shelly R. Fredman, Howard Zinn remarks,

" People think there must be some magical tactic, beyond the traditional

ones - protests, demonstrations, vigils, civil disobedience - but there

is no magical panacea, only persistence. "

They Track Journalists, Don't They?

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706C.shtml

ABC reported that the government had amassed the call records of tens

of millions of Americans. One of the people who helped break that story

is Brian Ross, an investigative reporter for ABC News who also helped

break the story of the US government's secret prisons in Romania and

Poland. Ross recently found out that the government was tracking his

phone

calls as well. Amy Goodman from Democracy Now! interviews.

More E-Voting Concerns Surface With State Primaries Under Way

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706D.shtml

From serious security flaws that could allow hackers easy access to

electronic voting systems to routine computer malfunctions and

undelivered

software, state and local officials are one by one joining voter-access

groups and computer scientists in questioning the reliability of the

three major suppliers of electronic voting machines.

Hey Millennials, Debt Becomes You

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706E.shtml

Educational debt is the most visible - but not the only - barrier to

the well-being of the " millennial generation, " roughly defined as

Americans born after 1978. Every gate on the way to middle-class life

is now

tougher to unlock. Mortgages, health insurance expenses, car

maintenance, child care and tax loads for two-income families have all

ballooned.

US Secretly Backing Warlords in Somalia

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706F.shtml

More than a decade after US troops withdrew from Somalia following a

disastrous military intervention, officials of Somalia's interim

government and some US analysts of Africa policy say the United States

has

returned to the African country, secretly supporting secular warlords who

have been waging fierce battles against Islamic groups for control of

the capital, Mogadishu.

George Monbiot | When Two Poor Countries Reclaim Oil Fields

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706G.shtml

The outcry over Bolivia's re-nationalization and the silence over

Chad's betrays the hypocrisy of the critics.

Testimony: Bulgarian Nurses Were Tortured in Libya

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706H.shtml

A former Libyan detainee asserts he witnessed the torture of five

Bulgarian nurses accused of inoculating children with AIDS.

The Scariest Predators in the Corporate Jungle

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051706I.shtml

" The problems of corruption and the misallocation of public revenues

have been endemic, " a United Nations study points out. " They undermine

the rule of law, impede the pursuit of social objectives, and contribute

to conflicts that frequently foster human rights abuse.... "

VIDEO | Mother's Day Call for Peace

A Report by Geoffrey Millard and Scott Galindez

http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm

Hundreds of mothers, some with their children while others were

mourning the loss of theirs, spent this Mother's Day in Washington, DC,

calling for an end to the war in Iraq. TruthOut's Geoffrey Millard and

Scott

Galindez were there.

VIDEO | Silent March Honors the Fallen

A Report by Scott Galindez

http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm

On Saturday, May 13, a silent march was held on the National Mall in

Washington, DC. Family members of soldiers who have died in Iraq were

joined by families of those currently serving as well as Iraq War

veterans

who now oppose the war. The event was held in conjunction with Eyes

Wide Open, a traveling memorial which displays a pair of boots for every

soldier who has died in Iraq. Eyes Wide Open is part of ongoing efforts

by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) to end the war.
