Guest guest
Hi y'all, Actually, Anya has studied this Citrus thing in school I think .. and maybe later had some practical work with it. My two cents on Citrus is from learning it ground up in the last few years. So I wouldn't try to call myself knowledgeable in this area .. Origanums and Rosa damascena are my true loves. As for eating Citrus .. I love those little dark green Turkish LEMONS. Yep .. Green as Kermit the Frog they are. The problem with Citrus is there are too many problems. Botanical Names get us in the ballpark but there are so many cultivars and clones grown for commercial purposes that the Botanical Names are often unreliable. Still .. they are far more reliable than Common Names. ;-p Family ......... Citrus Genus .......... Rutaceae Species ........ has around 16 species Sub-species .... many Varieties ...... many Cultivars ...... many Technically .. some Species are: Citrus aurantifolia ........ Lime Citrus limon ............... Lemon Citrus medica .............. Citron Citrus mitis ............... Citrofortunella Citrus reticulata .......... Clementine, Mandarin, Tangerine Citrus sinensis ............ Sweet Orange Citrus aurantium ........... Bitter Orange And so on ....... But the common essential oils we find used in Aromatherapy are: Lemon ....... Citrus limonum var. Meyer .. and sub-species & cultivars. .............. Origin .. world-wide but Mediterranean countries .. Italy, .............. Sicily, Cyprus and Turkey .. and the Middle East Israel .............. are famous for fine Lemon production. Lime ........ Citrus aurantifolia (previously C. medica .. var. acida .............. Origin .. Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, .............. Brazil, Peru, USA (Florida), West Indies and Africa are .............. famous for fine Lime production. .............. Varieties limetta (Sweet Lime) .. C. latifolia Tanaka .............. (Persian Lime) and numerous cultivars. Mandarin .... Citrus reticulata .. varieta mandarin. .............. Origin .. Eastern Europe, North & South America, Turkey, .............. Greece, Africa, Japan and China .. mainly. .............. Colors .. depends on the ripeness of the fruit when the .............. peel is processed .. orange, yellow, green are possible. Tangerine ... Citrus reticulata .. varieta tangerine. .............. Origin .. same as for Mandarin. Tangerine is usually less .............. fruity than mandarin. Neroli ...... Citrus aurantium .. sub-species amara. (Orange Blossom) .............. Syn. Bitter Orange .. Citrus bigaradia. .............. Origin .. North Africa, Turkey, Southern Europe and most .............. places where orange trees are grown. Best is Tunisia. Orange ...... Sweet .. Citrus sinensis, var. sinensis or dulcis. .............. Syn. Citrus aurantium. Orange ...... Bitter .. Citrus aurantium .. sub-species amara. .............. Origin for both .. California & Florida, South America, .............. Cyprus, Caribbean Islands, Mediterranean Region, Russia, .............. Eastern Europe, China, Africa and some other countries. Petitgrain .. Citrus aurantium .. sub-species amara .. Bitter Orange. .............. However .. commercially we can find Petitgrain made from .............. leaves of Lemon and Orange. Pretty much the same origins. The above is certainly not all inclusive .. and I might even be wrong cause I didn't get to sleep last night .. worked straight through .. so I'm a bit more brain dead than usual now. ;-p Y'all keep smiling, Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
