Lime ** Difference Between Indian Lime and Ordinary Lime?

Citrus medica var. acida .. is another Botanical Name for Citrus

aurantifolia .. Common Name is Bitter Lime. Citrus medica var. vulgaris

is better known as Citron or Cedrat. Citrus medica var. bajoura is a

lime used in Southern Italy as a condiment .. and it is the Lime from

which Petitgrain is steam distilled. So .. its impossible to tell which

ones you have based on the incomplete Botanical Names they provided.

 

Persian Lime is Citrus latifolia, as is Tahitian Lime. Italian Lime is

Citrus limetta .. Mexican Lime is also Citrus Limetta. There is no such

thing as an ordinary Lime .. there are far more varieties than I have

mentioned here.

Probably not .. Common Names are generally colloquial .. no inherent

meanings. But Botanical Names .. even though some plants have more than

one .. mean something in any language.

You did well .. :-P Now if you start calling them Laurus nobilis and

Pimenta racemosa the folk in the Mediterranean area and the West Indies,

where they are common .. will know which ones you're talking about. ;-p

The problem with Common Names on these two aromatics is that the former

is called Bay, Laurel, Bay Laurel, Laurel Leaf, Defne, Sweet Bay and

True Bay .. and the latter is called West Indian Bay, Bay Rum, Bay Berry

and Wild Cinnamon .. and it also has an additional Botanical Name of

Pimenta acris. :-(

And smiling customers in 50 US States and 37 other countries .. but none

in Sweden. :-(
