EDITORIAL

No Press Releases Issued for " International CFS Awareness Day "

By Leslee  Dudley & Sean Dudley

Today May 12, 2006 is " International CFS Awareness Day, " and the week of

May 8th - 14th is " M.E. Awareness Week " in the United Kingdom.

However, no press releases were issued or events planned by United States

public health agencies to bring awareness  to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

(CFS).  Not the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for

Disease Control (CDC) nor the Office of Women's Health (OWH) which is in

charge of CFS, issued any statements.

One of the responsibilities of U.S. health agencies is to issue press

releases for specific diseases in order to promote awareness. Patient

advocacy groups have dedicated specific months, weeks and days to bring

public and political awareness to their diseases in hopes of increased

funding for research.   Many organizations compete for this type of media

attention and free publicity.

The NIH did issue a press release informing the public that " Healthy Vision

Month is Observed in May " http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/may2006/nei-01.htm .

The CDC alerted the public that " May is Hepatitis Awareness Month "

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5518a1.htm?s_cid==mm5518a1_e .

May is also " World Lyme Disease Awareness Month, " " Canadian Multiple

Sclerosis Awareness Month, " and " USA National Arthritis Month. "    In the

last three years, May 11th has been dedicated to " World Lupus Day. "    For

decades, the entire month of October has been dedicated to Lupus awareness.

CFS has no awareness month nor week.   Chronic Fatigue Syndrome only has

one day, May 12 as " International CFS Awareness Day, " although some

Fibromyalgia groups will call it " Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. "   This is the

one day we are able get the message across about our illness and to create

publicity from the media.  Therefore, this omission by our own governmental

health agencies is damaging.

To prevent further non action, patients should contact the DHHS, CDC, NIH,

OWH  and their members of Congress to make them aware of this

situation.  Remind them that nothing has improved since the GOA

report.  CFS is still the least funded of all the diseases at the NIH.  CFS

is entitled to and deserves the concern from our health agencies that they

give to other illnesses.
