OT: Candle Discussion

Hi y'all,

 

I think Idma is down .. I sent a post announcing I had returned from the

Rose Fields and I received a comeback copy .. then I sent two more, one

of them being the below .. and nothing. That was almost 36 hours ago.

Anyway .. this one needs to go on Idma but since its down now, I'll post

it to this list.

Got back and started checking emails .. figured I see a lotta posts on

Snowbank Therapy, NAHA and Young Living .. maybe some other topics we

rightfully (methinks) pay a lotta attention to .. but I was surprised to

count 30 some odd posts on Candles .. wow!! Y'all have said your thing

but I was out of pocket so I wanna say mine now.

 

A couple of times in the past I have been called a bully when I came on

strong over something I believe in .. maybe its easier to call someone a

bully than to defeat them in a war of words. What I've not been called

is a curmudgeon. Probably cause I smile when I'm doing what some folks

mistakenly interpret as bullying. :-) I think I have lived long enough

to be able to separate issues that are worth fighting about from those

that are just worth discussing .. this Candle Crap is just a discussion.

 

Seems the great Candle Discussion started when someone gave a URL for a

company that made great soy candles .. then Smilin' Effie came on line

and said the best she had " personally ever burned " were Janet Gold's

candles. Then all kinds of hell broke loose .. ;-p

 

I know that Janet has not advertised her website .. matter'a fact not

many knew it even existed as she was still working on it betwixt two

or three other projects .. and I don't think she was ready to put it up

for the world to critique .. but maybe some good came out of it cause

she made a couple of changes based on the Candle Discussion on Idma.

One of those projects she was working on was making a lotta candles for

me. She's making 100% EO candles that I'm gonna call EO candles .. and

she's making 100% FO candles that I'm gonna call FO candles.

 

And NONE of the FO candles are planned for sale on my website .. they're

gonna be offered in my new walk-in store in Friendsville .. gonna start

putting it together when the Highway Department moves out and we move in

on the first of July 2002. Matter of fact, I had no intentions of even

offering the Essential Oil Candles on my website cause I don't see them

as having a thing to do with Aromatherapy and I don't try to portray my

products as being something they are not.

 

Folks in Friendsville .. and in most places in the USA, are used to the

paraffin candles .. but I'm not going that route cause of the lawsuits

that are going down in the Republic of California now .. I'm gonna stick

with soy and beeswax. But lots folks have already said they like the

Apple Pie candle and we ain't found no Apple Pie EO yet .. :-9

 

Most folks in Friendsville are used to living in the world of chemistry,

like most of you on this list. They use cosmetics and many products

that have man-made cores. I figure if they wanna buy candles that smell

like punkin' pie then I'm gonna give'em one that smells like that! I

ain't got the time nor the patience nor the desire to be attacking no

windmills or trying to teach the world to go only natural .. I see that

as being a lot like peeing in the wind. Might give you a nice warm

feeling whilst you doing it but when it dries its still gonna stink!

 

Not everyone is a so-called purist. I'm opening the door of my store to

folks who wanna buy a lotta things that would not be sold on this list

or on my website. So no need for subtle criticism in that regard.

 

Then somebody asked Effie:

To answer that one ... again .. I'm not gonna call the candles made with

100% EO as Aromatherapy Candles .. I think the idea of an Aromatherapy

Candle is IFFY in the first place. I'm gonna sell candles with 100%

pure EO and I am gonna call them as candles made with 100% pure EO but I

think its a useless investment because the heat from the candle is gonna

alter the integrity of the chemicals in the EO in the second place. If

a customer asks me I am gonna tell'em what I think too! So none of you

good folks will EVER see me advertising an Aromatherapy Candle for sale

and I'm not gonna say bad things about them that choose to do that ... I

might snicker and giggle a lot about it but I'll try real hard to keep

it private. ;-)

 

I'm gonna indicate those candles that contain FOs and being candles made

with Synthetic Fragrance ... and gonna indicate those that contain 100%

EOs as being candles made with Essential Oils .. Janet is experimenting

with lotsa EOs now. Fact is, the mantlepiece in my office is covered

with her candles that contain only 100% EOs. Gave one to the wife of

the Secretary General of the Turkish General Staff the other night .. it

was a big muther in a big jar with a wooden top and it was pretty and

smelled nice. She liked it a lot .. I smiled when she smiled. :-P

 

I'm gonna be offering lots of other goodies in my Friendsville store ..

and a lot of these items will be made by folks in the cottage industry,

I don't want no big-time company crap .. except for the pop/soda machine

we gonna have. Can't avoid dealing with the Big Guys on that one .. and

can't avoid all the synthetic crap gonna be in that soda pop either ..

but then, folks in most places are used to that .. evil as it be. :-(

 

If y'all got something you make good to offer .. like salts and incense

and creams and whatsoever .. send me an off line post and we might be

able to do some business. Chris Ziegler already has a lot of my soaps

drying now - none of them contain FOs .. all Essential Oils .. and no

animal fat either .. all veggie they be .. though I have nothing against

animal fat in soaps I made a decision to avoid it. But soaps are for

putting on the bod and candles ain't so FO candles don't bother me and

that stuff about FO toxicity in the air also doesn't bother me cause I

don't believe it and besides most of you are breathing crap daily that

could kill you anyway .. we have clean air in Friendsville. ;-9

 

Gonna sell honey and nuts and spices and herbs and original items made

by the local Shawnee folks and things natural to the Appalachian area.

 

Gonna sell lots of hand-crafted copper goods and meerschaum and textile

items .. much of it made by our villagers in Turkey. Fig Jams and Rose

Petal Jams and Turkish Delight and whatever else comes to mind. A few

old Russian Samovars too .. and other antique odds and ends. After the

trips I have planned to some places this year, I will probably add some

items from Bulgaria and Madagascar. I'm gonna call the new shop in

Friendsille " Anatolian Treasures Natural Products and Exotic Gifts. "

 

Now .. the fact that I'm gonna have some FO candles and a Pop Machine in

my Natural Products Store doesn't bother me anymore than a Drug Store

selling stuff asides Drugs .. or a Coffee Shop selling cakes and teas.

 

Opening that store is a gamble .. especially since Friendsville only has

600 folks and a few four laiged critters .. but we get lots of tourists

from the big city for the snow ski and white water rafting season. Also

lots of folks come to fish and camp at Deep Creek Lake and Park. They

love to spend money. If the store goes tits up on Natural Products and

Exotic Gifts .. I might be able to save it by offering pure Moonshine

and renting X-Rated Movies .. wouldn't have to make a lotta changes on

the sign .. just change the " x " to an " r " and I'm good to go. ;-p
