Guest guest
Hi Emryldgea .. other good folks, > Despite the fact that this will probably make me look like an idiot > I am going to post it for others who may benifit from my mistake. Not at all ... I've seen these words from a lot of new folks .. and you done by posting it .. :-) > I was looking for a teacher and with my current lifestyle I opted > for a at home course, one that was creditable, mind you I at this > time have no interest in making a living at aromatherapy, but if I > am going to use the oils and I have a lot of respect for them I want > to learn to use them properly and without danger. Amen to that .. and when you do learn this, you'll be in the minority so you should be happy. You need the basics of blending and safety, the therapeutic aspects are another matter .. and in many cases, overhyped based on lots of rumor, speculation and extrapolation. The so-called synergistic effects of blending are not as powerful as some folks claim because the basic chemical constituents of many oils are shared .. meaning, 4-5 oils in a blend is more for marketing purposes than for therapeutic gain. > So my first step was to go to NAHA and look up schools that meet > their standards- cost was a factor, not trying to cheap out just First mistake was here .. NAHA has no standards. They have friends and if you are friends with the heirachy, you get recommended. They will argue with this but they can't support their arguement. Those of you who saw my " extended " dialogue with Jade Shutes some months ago (on the Idma List) will know what I am talking about. > trying to obtain leval 1 basic knowledge at a reasonable price. > Most of the courses were within the same price range, some were up > to $1000. Folks get what they can get .. but you don't have to pay that much for even a SUPERIOR course. I mean a course with no bovine excrement, no rumors or fairy tales that have been passed along from book to book and course to course because instructors were either too lazy or maybe afraid to take on the rumors .. so they proliferate misinformation. As for level 1 or 3 or 18, what you will get from the best courses is a firm foundation upon which you can learn more on your own. As is the case with academia, the real learning comes after graduation. But some folks will be better equipped to absorb the new info than will others. > I picked the teacher who was close to where I live for various > reasons. I spoke to this person asked about there credentials and > what was required for the course, I will not tell the name as they > are a widely know and respected in the Aromatherapy community. I reckon we gotta take 3 or 4 shots at guessing .. that is, if we don't consider where you live .. ;-9 > I spoke about having the oils already that were in the course and > did not want to purchase more quantities until I decide on ones > that I like to work with and enjoy the most, although the oils were > optional I do think that it ended up being an issue, that is where > the Vanilla quest came from, I truly expected when I asked about the > oil, and discussed that I did not have it that a sample would be sent > to me - no it wasn't but I was not too surprised, as I could have > purchased it from the teacher, however it is a $100 minimum order. You are getting a feel for the cottage-industry of aromatherpy and the gud ol' boys and gals network. I've always maintained and have made it clear on many lists that aromatherapy as it is practiced today SUCKs! However, the essential oils smell nice and if properly used, they can greatly benefit us in mind, body and soul. I've written on that at the below URL, and it was my opinion at that time ... but as for which of the courses I would recommend now, it has since changed in the year since I wrote it ... as there is a new course out now. http://www.aromamedical.demon.co.uk/new/newadvice.htm > The course itself is challenging and does exceed NAHA standards and > is quite smartly put together NAHA has no standards .. they have depended on the ARC to determine the standards and the standards the ARC developed were those outlined by those folks they recommend. > as looking up the answers and " cheating " will not get it done. Looking up the answers is the ONLY way unless you are psychic ... ;-p Not sure what cheating means to you but to me, learning about any subject is accumulation of information from multiple sources. Since aromatherapy is a non-exact psydo-science to begin with, the goal, in my opinion, should be learning first and secondly passing a test to show that you are proficient in a non-regulated, non-recognized field. > I do however feel it is a bit too indepth for someone who is just > learning, but no one forced my hand so I am not whining - and I have > nothing to compare it with. Methinks that if it is indepth (and accurate information) you should be grinning like a Cheshire Cat .. :-) Many folks get less than they pay for. If you later decide that Aromatherapy is your thing fer'shur, and you decide to go for more, you can consider the course mentioned below and you will then have a basis for comparision. Many folks who have taken AT courses are now taking the one I mentioned below and they are surprised at the comparison. > The teacher sold themselves as being available for ? - that has not > been my experience so far. There are also extra expenses involved > that I should have anticipated but did not, supplies that you cannot > run out to walmart to get and some that I am not familiar with. There should not be surprise expenses. They must tell you up front the cost of the course and they should recommend a set of starter oils that will be used for the course. If they don't sell those oils, that's better too. You can get those starter oils in small quantities. But many teachers will tell you that you should buy their oils because they know they are pure. Ask them how they know they are pure - ask them for a GC analysis and watch them dance the schuffle schuffle .. ;-p > My intent here is not to trash this teacher, I do feel they are a > good teacher, just not right for me from my perspective so far. I am > not a priority student and any questions can take 2 or 3 days to be > answered, they have described themselves as busy - but I don't think > I am needy in the sense of constant calls and questions, perhaps I > expect too much. I think you might expect more contact than will be required. I think you can get all but a few of your answers easily from within the content of a course - and there is NOTHING wrong with asking questions of a list such as this one .. regardless of the particular reason for asking, the ultimate reason is to learn. Its a helluva lot better to learn the correct information than search and choose the incorrect info just so you can be told you are wrong - huh? And there are few BAD teachers around .. some are just pushing the old information .. continuing to take the path of least resistence. The new course (below) is a bit different in that respect. > So I am not whining about my choice, just sharing my experience so > far so that if anyone else is trying to decide on a teacher they can > perhaps have a more pleasant experience, it is a investment, the way > I look at it, and I will tell you that I paid almost $400 without > the oils. Good thing you did tell folks .. they need to hear such things - and if folks are interested in learning where to sign up for the BEST course around today (in my opinion) .. just check out this URL: http://www.aromamedical.demon.co.uk/course/coursedetails.html And if you wanna get a Ten Percent (10%) discount on the course - you gotta go through me .. ;-p That's because I represent Martin Watt in North and South America and Australia .. simple as that. There are no discounts offered anywhere except through me and I assign folks a control number that must be used for the discount. So if anyone is interested, just ask and we'll make it happen .. :-) There are a number of nurses taking Martin's course now .. the word has gotten around. Chris has completed other courses, but she is about to begin Martin's course. Smart gal methinks .. ;-) > Emryldgea Y'all keep smiling, Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
