Brown Sugar In Soap

I made a soap with brown sugar in the recipe. What motivated me to do it

was that I had some old hard brown sugar and wanted to use the new bag I

have here for cooking, so I used the old stuff for making soap! It made

such a nice smelling soap and it lathers SO darn well! I like it a lot!

I don't know if white sugar, turbanado sugar or sucanat would be as nice

.... haven't made soap with either of those.

I just wanted to share this good thing :)

Margaret,

I was skeptical about this too, but I have to say that I think it

does make a difference. I add my sugar to my lye water BEFORE the

lye. If you add it later, it does not dissolve.

Thanks Eva,

Do you use refined or brown sugar?

Also, wonder if it was added at trace, and didn't dissolve if it would

gently exfoliate as well as increase the later?? Any thoughts?

Hi Margaret,

Hm, I honestly will use whatever I have handy! Most often in our

house that is a lightly refined sugar, like turbinado or sucanat. I

am not a chemist, so I cannot be sure WHY the sugar does not

dissolve, just know that it will not. Whatever happens with the

sodium and chloride bind with the hydrogen and the oxygen atoms, and

the reaction that takes place there, affects the ability of the

solution to dissolve the sugar. It does not really work as an

exfoliating factor either, because it chunks up in a weird way,

almost freezing like hot sugar water in cold water, like

crystallizing.

I generally will use 1 tsp/sugar per pound of water.

Hi Margaret :)

I actually added mine to the oils. I heated them up, melting the solids

oils as usual, stirred the oil/sugar mixture and let the sugar fully

dissolve. Then I added my lye water and stirred to trace as usual ... :)

I read somewhere that sugar can enhance the lather in soap, but hadn't

tried

it yet.

How did you add it?
