Guest guest
Now I think I'm about to go bonkers - I have this awfull headache for the second time in one week. Yeahh, the first was on NY day - BUT not entirely the fault of de wino :-P - since I had it coming even before the champange was poored. I simply don't know if it's classical migraine or not, but it's leftsided, hurt from the shoulderblade and up in the scull, behind my left eye and I'm nausious (nope I don't know how it's spelled) too. I tried to put some Japanese Minth EO (don't have the latin name just here right now, but it's not Mentha Arvensis) on the neck, it felt coold, but I'm still quisy and the dull pain inside persists. Sooo - any good advice here?? Pleas oh please help a very cold (yep it's round -6F here) Swedish woman who realy wished she was on Hawaii or someplace as warm and lovely as it sounds. And - a very belated - Happy New Year to everyone! Ylva
Guest guest
Dear Ylva, As another sufferer of headaches ( I think mostly mine are sinus-related) I know how debilitating it can be to suffer so much pain. I'm wondering if loud noises and/or bright lights are also bothering you. AND, have you thought about any ongoing stress, or food allergies. Lawless suggests some herbal remedies such as chamomile, hops, linden when taken as tea. Trying to identify the cause is very important. Anyway..... the nausea is not a good sign and I'm thinking that a medical check up could help. Also, I've had some luck with massage and accupressure (which I use in conjunction with lavender, marjoram and/or Roman chamomile for their sedative and antispasmodic effects.) Cold compress (not eos, but herbal - chamomile, lavender or rose water) on the eyes (chamomile tea bags steeped out and put in the frig work great!) or on the forehead or on the back of the neck) Baths are always very nice and relaxing too!! I'm a great bath fan. So, close your eyes and imagine what it would be like to be here in Hawaii.... smell the cool Kona winds, hear the bobo birds chattering, feel the warm heat of the sun on your skin..... Know that my heart is with you.... Take care and good luck... and let us know how it goes... Guest guest
Oh Su, Your so kind so my eyes are watering - I'm very emotional here on top of the noice and light thing...And - teh sun is shining brightly and my wonderboys (3,5 and 6,5 only) are listeing and acting out to a ACDC DVD...and that surely wont help one bit LOL. I thin I have to try one of Butch's herbal tea bags - I think I have one with chamomille left...and one linden too. Otherwise Ijust have to go thorugh my baskets of dried herbs, i think there is some chamomille in there. Ongoing stress- LOL, I'm on sickelave since 15 moths for " burned out syndrome " (that's what the docs here are calling it). But - no more red whine, no more liquor at all :-( stay of chocolates (and that will be a real tough one) and then see if it's get any better. Now I just have to try to suffer through tthe day, we are invited to friends for dinner and I can't cancel 8haven't seen them for a long time and we share a very strong bond - our kids). I wish I had the heat on in my greenhouse (it's down for the winter) - then i could sit there with my artificial daylight lamp (for the plants, but it must be good for humans too neh`??), with the heat fan on and dream of Hawaii. Lucky lucky you!! Hugs, Ylva
Guest guest
Hey Ylva Sounds like a classic " liver " headache... yep stay away from wine and chocolate for sure- and too many strong smells. Amassage would be good- acupuncture too. Drink warm water with lemon in it - or chamomile tea with liver in it- chamomile is a nervine, pain reliever and gentle liver mover. St Johns Wort Tincture is helpful, too- especially if you get in the daylight for a bit each day. Eating milk thistle seeds is good for general liver health- buy the *whole seeds* and grind them in your retired coffee grinder- just a few TBS at a time as they stay fresh longer whole... Take a TBS in a cup of warm water and drink the slurry or sprinkle on food...do this 2-3 x a day. Forget the " sylimarin " extracts- the whole seed is much more helpful and cheaper! Take a hot bath. Drink warm liquids. Breathe. Ask the kids to turn off the AC DC!! Michelle

Guest guest
Hej! Du Starkars lille tjej Du! Migraines Suck! They always suck. Take it from a once to twice a monther. I have yet to find a sure fire remedy but I'll tell you what helps me. I usually start out with Tylenol extra strength 2 pills. I know it's not going to help but I do it anyway. Then when it ramps up a notch I put heat on it. (This is NOT an ad) I grab one of my kids Woobeys (YOU can find something similar in the local health store or mall, don't get a smelly one though cause it might exacerbate your headache), chuck it in the microwave and put it over my right eye (because it's feeling like it's being pushed out by a pencil), when it gets too hot, I'll move it to the back of my neck and then to the top of my head (Some people really like Cold for their Migraines, so freeze your Woobey wanna-be instead for a couple of hours). A lot of times, if I catch it in time, I can stop it there. The rest of the time when I haven't caught it soon enough or it's just DETERMINED to be a BAst-rd of a headache, then I Take 800 mg of Advil. I was told by a pharmacist that in the trials they were taking 1600 mgs with no harm. I am NOT advising that, I'm not advising ANYTHING, I'm just telling you what works for me. Anyway, Advil knocks me out for some weird reason, so I heat up the Woobey one more time, Go lay down with it and usually fall asleep for about an hour. That will help for most of the other migranes. Every rare (Thank all the great Gods) once in a while, there's nothing that will help except hours in a dark room with no noise and I have to wait it out. I hope there's something in this monologue that helps. And there's worse places to be than NY. A LOT of Scandinavians ended up in the Great Lake states and that's a LOT colder and MUCH more snow! AND Stockholm was no bed of Roses either during the winter. Buck up, at least you have great shops, art Gallerys and museums to visit when you're feeling better, which I hope is soon! Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Ylva, I am sorry to hear you are not on top of the world. I suffered with migraines for over 25 years at least once or twice a week. I usually ended up in the emergency room getting shot up with some drug or other but then I happened onto EO's. What works for me is the following: I gets lots of rest in a dark room. (that is hard with little ones). I also have a small eye pillow with flax seed in it. You can heat the pillow or freeze it. Lay down and place it over your eyes. I also have a blend of lavender chamomile, roman and rosemary in Jojba oil. I massage this into my temples, in front of and behind my ears and along the base of the head. This helps me to relax enough to allow the swelling that is closing off the blood vessels leading into the head to go down. Ginger tea helps with the nausea. If you can get rid of the nausea the pain quite often follows withing 4 to 6 hours. I know the pain is so extreme that you do not want anyone touching it but a massage loosing up the muscles along the shoulderblades and the shoulders sometimes assist the swelling to go down. HTH is some way. As we all know what works for one of us, does not always work for another. Good luck. > > - > <ruby_mama2001 > > Monday, January 06, 2003 2:41 AM > Failproof remedy for > migraintype of headaches??? > > > > Now I think I'm about to go bonkers - I have > this awfull headache for > > the second time in one week. Guest guest
> tincture of St Johns worth..but alcohol?+ > Ylva Just put it in warm water and leave it for a few minutes- the alcohol will evaporate.. These types of headaches are frequently hormone related and I cant stress enough how helpful acupuncture(and chinese herbs) is to move the liver and balance the hormones...I know first hand, as I was getting migraines every two weeks for awhile there- they would send me to bed for the day and night! The chamomile tea with lemon in it is EXCELLENT as well. Hope you feel better Michelle
Guest guest
Yes. Not such a stupid answer. Heat works best for ME! But once after a root canal it was cold that worked best. It depends on personal preference of your headache. MY headaches like heat and when I use the heat I think of it as "Burning out the Headache" Many others however, like the cold. it does depend. Medically (here is the whole span of my knowledge. This is it, catch it quick or you'll miss it), when a headache occurs the blood vessels that carry the blood to the brain constrict. Heat can help relax them. Mind you, I'm talking Headaches. Migraines are another total beastie. While there is constriction of the blood vessels there too, you also have the added problem of triggers and hormones involved. One of the most notorious triggers is caffeine, which is one reason my beloved chocolate is also my downfall at times and I HAVE noticed, that if I up my intake of chocolate, I do get an increase of headaches and migraines. Then of course, different migraines have different names. Mine is called a "Cluster" migraine. Which means it is usually centered behind one eye. These can be the most debilitating of the Migraines. I am very lucky as many of those who get the cluster type migraine can be knocked out and useless with pain for days. Me, I'm usually recovered in a few hours. it's rare for me to get one that lasts over night. Also, interestingly enough, it's mostly men who get this type of Migraine. Anyway, you didn't ask for a whole dissertation on migraines so I'll leave it at that. Basically, which does YOUR headache prefer? Hot or cold? Woobey Queen is once again temporarily >shutting up!< Cheers!Kathleen PetridesThe Woobey QueenWoobey Tip:http://www.woobeyworld.com - crwilm Tuesday, January 07, 2003 8:19 AM Re: Failproof remedy for migraintype of headaches??? Guest guest
Sorry to hear that the migraine is still with you -- I hate the ones that hang on and on . . . My method is very, very similar to Cheryl's. The very first thing I take, however, is three Excedrin. Nothing else works for me in the slightest, and it does work for many of my migraines, especially when used with eos. I use massage in the same way, and it's tremendously helpful; the eo's in my blend include lavender & rosemary as well. I massage temples, brow, all along the base of the head, from ear to ear, and also shoulders (as much as I can reach). If you have someone to give a foot massage, that can be helpful, as it is so relaxing. While I am massaging, I do as much visualization & relaxation technique as my brain can muster. Ginger tea is a good idea; I use peppermint to combat the nausea. One thing I've noticed, however, is that if I do get sick, that will often mark the beginning of the end, so to speak. Usually, once I'm sick, I am more able to sleep the migraine away. Not every time, but often. Hopefully, with all these ideas, you'll come up with a combination that works for you! Guest guest
>Which is best for migrains cold or heat? >Carol For me, a very hot shower or bath helps, at least for a time. Afterward, I like cold on the back of my neck -- a bag of peas from the freezer does the trick. The idea is to warm the extremities to draw that pounding blood from the head, and constrict the blood vessels in the head. If all else fails, I use sumatriptan (Imitrex), which is a vaso-constrictor and more. Jeanine --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Sorry, I haven't read these posts so maybe this was already mentioned...Feverfew works great for migraines. After I had my 3rd. child, I started getting migraines every day for hours on end. It was horrible to have this going on while taking care of a 3 year old, 1 1/2 year old, and a 1 week old! (Finally discovered it was dariy causing it.) I would take 2 Feverfew and follow up with 1 more every couple of hours until it was gone, and it worked wonderfully. An eye bag with lavender scented flax seed can help too, but for me any scents just made mine worse so be careful. A hot bath (I had to have DH run the bath for me or the running water would make me want to crawl out of my skin, it was so loud) in a dark bathroom helped me to at least relax so I wasn't making it worse by tensing up. The main things for me when I get them (I still get them if I drink too much milk) is a dark room, covering my eyes, taking Feverfew, and making the house as absolutely quiet as possible. Some (((HUGS))) for ya. Those things are horrible. -- <>< Erin very full time Mama to The Trio & Sprout! Guest guest
I have a sister and a daughter that suffer with migraine headaches. Both have found a great relief by using MSM cream. They apply it to the area that the headache begins (temple area, back of the neck, forehead, etc) as soon as they notice it coming on. Pretty amazing how it helps. -Helen >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. > Sorry to hear that the migraine is still with you -- I hate the > ones that hang on and on . . . >>
