After X-mas Soap making

Hi Su :)

Usually about 1 tsp - 1 Tbsp. of essential oil per lb of M & P soap base will scent it quite nicely. Some scents such as the mints or heavy florals like Ylang Ylang need the lesser amount of oil to get the soap good and smelly while other oils such as the citrus oils need a bit more to keep their scent. In their case adding a "fixative oil" helps too (i.e. making a blend of patchouli oil and orange oil to keep the orange scent fixed). Also be careful when using potentially irritating oils such as peppermint or cinnamon, you want to use as little as possible of those to get the a nice scent while not making the soap irritating (I feel that they are better made into blends actually, rather than using them straight, that way you use less of them and still get the nice scent you are looking for).

Soap making IS a VERY addictive hobby :) I just love it!

Here is a site with some good M & P tips and recipes:

Hello all,

Hope everyone has recovered from any holiday madness.... I am very quiet lurker who has recently become hooked on making soaps using essential oils. I figured this list would be a good resource... all you wise and crafty folks!! Does anyone out there have any measurements of how many drops of eos can be used per lb of M & P soap??? I have found so many different ratios that I am confused!! I am wanting to create more "therapeutic" soaps rather than just "nice smelling".... Also, any really neat recipes would be greatly appreciated.

I am so excited about this new use for eos..... I am becoming a total soap making addict!!! (Too bad I only have one body to test all my experiments on!!) ; - )

Aromatically yours!!

Hi Chris-oh-sweet smelling list mom....

Belated thanks for the tips about the ratios of eo to M & P soap. I've graduated to experimenting w/ some simple hand-milled soaps. All my friends are thrilled to be guinea pigs. I'm actually thinking of doing a little business on the side....It's a great way to promote the use of eos (my real-real passion).

My favorite so far is a milk-honey-oatmeal bar (to which I added Vit E and some sandlewood and vanilla)..... Do you (or anyone else out there) know of any lists which address soapmaking??? (I am an addict, aren't I??) ; - ) It's so quiet here in Hawaii.... haven't found my crafters circle yet.

Still sweetly yours,

Su
