Guest guest
Hi Jennifer, > While mixing some oregano in milk for my daughter tonight, with a > spoon, afterwards I licked the spoon, Upon which I remembered that > oregano is not to be used in pregnancy Whoever said or wrote that is wrong. Its just NOT true .. there is no danger in sniffing Oregano whilst pregnant and there is no danger in what you have done because the amount you took was next to nothing. Ingesting EOs during pregnancy is not a good idea but in this case, its not an issue .. its a matter of toxicity and the ability of the liver to do its thing. You are a heckuva long way away from being anywhere near a dangerous level of toxicity. > Ack! It was about 3 drops in about a half cup of milk. There was not enough there to even begin to think of problems. In fact, you could ingest a far more toxic EO in far greater amounts .. or some kitchen cleaner for that matter .. and the result might be you poison yourself but not the fetus. The tales about avoiding this and that EO during pregnancy are old wives tales .. rumors .. misinformation and disinformation. Again .. I say pregnant ladies should not ingest EOs at that time .. but inhalation is perfectly safe and the amount you have ingested is like ZERO .. nothing to be concerned about. On the issue of abortifacents .. we're talking about toxicity - that is, poisoning a pregnant mother .. but there's little that can be done to dislodge a healthy fetus from a healthy mother. Poisoning the mother can harm the fetus but that is not an easy thing to do .. it almost has to be a planned act. The LD50 tests for Oregano speculate the lethal dose for a 3 year old child is 21 ml .. which is one heckuva lotta oil and I don't think there is a child or adult or drunk who could consume that much .. reflex action would force vomiting long before that .. it's sorta like trying to commit suicide by sticking your head in the toilet. Of course, less than that could possibly cause enough toxicity to create problems in an unhealthy mother or fetus. But sometimes healthy mothers accidently die and the fetus is saved. There are many folks who cover their butts by giving advice to not use this and that EO as it can cause epileptic seizures, raise in blood pressure, abortion, etc., and there is not one shred of evidence to support such claims .. the issues with essential oils are toxicity, irritation, sensitization and photosensitization. If a pregnant mother drinks Drano its possible to kill herself but we shouldn't say that Drano is an abortificant .. its a poison. I expect that you got that information from an AT novel .. there's no shortage of them. If Oregano was that harmful, the food industry would remove all the EO we consume in our food products on a daily basis. And in our toothpaste, ice cream, pastries, etc. We ingest and breathe many things on a daily basis that are more harmful than any EO. Check out the following URLs. http://www.fragrant.demon.co.uk/eosafety.html http://www.nature-helps.com/agora/pennyroy.htm > How bad is it that I did this? Well .. its very likely that you're gonna gain a whole buncha weight now and your youngun will probably be born naked. > Any advice? Yep .. walk often as you can and buy some diapers. ;-p > Also I went and downed about 2 cups of milk afterwards (kinda couldn't > help that because of the sting!) Milk should never be ingested by pregnant women. ;-p > Jennifer Flanagan Don't worry Jennifer .. no harm done. But try to avoid ingesting EOs for a while. :-P Regards and y'all keep smiling, Butch http://www.AV-AT.com PS: I'll add that if a lady has miscarried before, she should be real careful and if she asked me .. I'd tell her to avoid ALL essential oils. Why? Because she's proven that she has problems and I would give her advice to do ONLY what her doctor says. That is a very significant emotional experience and it's not abnormal for folks to seek blame in their own actions or to seek fault in others to avoid guilt .. in fact, there should be no guilt at all when a miscarriage occurs as its Mama Nature's way of taking care of a mistake .. but people are people and it's not unusal behavior to think in such a manner.
