Guest guest
Hi y'all, Lemme clarify some of what Chris has written below. I'm running out of stock in Maryland because I'm being swamped with orders for Turkish Rose Otto. Its at a point where for kilogram orders, I'm taking cash in advance because I can't afford to swing the costs when I have 5-6 orders for a kilo .. we're talking $20,000 plus in that case and from the time I purchase and go through the bureaucratic administrative crap required for an export .. and go through the same thing when it hits the USA .. its 20-25 days from date of purchase to date of delivery to my company in Maryland. Few small companies can handle financing such a buy for one oil only. The last 60 days has seen better than a 300% increase in demand from the same period last year. Why is this? Because .. the Bulgarians had a bad crop year .. that, coupled with the fact that they produce far less Rose Otto than the Turks do to begin with, and the fact that they are still experimenting with free-marketing after years of Central Government control .. encouraged them to make a real bad call and raise their prices like 35% - 40%. The Turkish producers had gotten used to a particular level of annual sales (triple that of Bulgaria) and they normally produced a bit more Rose Otto than they figured they would sell and turned the remainder into Rose Concrete. But this year, they were swamped because European perfumeries that had previously had contracts with Bulgaria turned to Turkey .. they made a run on Rose Otto. Likewise, in addition to the American and European Aromatherapy companies who routinely bought 1/2 kilo or a kilo from me from time to time, those that had previously purchased Bulgarian are now turning to me also. Unfortunately, ALL of the 2000 and 2001 Turkish Rose Otto is sold out! This has NEVER happened before. I had planned to sell out of Crop 2000 by New Year and start selling Crop 2001 .. and I would have given 10 to 1 odds they would not have sold out Crop 2001 already because its not happened in all the years I have worked this business. Now the Turks have raised their price around 10% .. the first raise in 7 years, though inflation was more than 400% in that period. Lucky are Americans and those with hard currency that the cost was pegged to the dollar instead of the Turkish Lira. Those countries who have fluctuating currency, and the Euro is just that, are paying more than the 10% increase. Turks are not going to peg any prices to the Euro .. nor would I. My volume buying cost (which was already discounted) went up 10% .. and I am not carrying all of that 10% cost over to buyers of kilo volumes for a number of reasons .. but there was a small increase in my prices. And I can't guarantee availability for the rest of this year. If they can sell ALL the 2002 crop at one swoop, they will do it and everybody will go home and relax until next June. I hope they do not but they might. This is NOT a buyer's market now - its at the pleasure of the seller. Like my Certified Organic Heli italicum from Corsica .. the demand is greater than the supply so I'm limiting everyone to one ounce on that and planning to be out before the new harvest. This is NOT a scare tactic or attempt to sway sales .. what you folks might buy in this offer Chris has made will likely be peanuts compared to the volume of individual orders we'll get in the next seven days - I want to make that clear and hope to NEVER EVER hear anyone say Butch Owen tried such a tactic .. I'm just telling y'all that I might be out of Rose Otto before the next harvest in June/July 2002 .. I hope that's not the case and I can't say for sure that will happen but producers here have said that if MIGHT go down. In any case, I have bought a stash for myself that is above my normal needs and if I see that we might run out before the end of the season there will be no more bulk sales coming from me .. I'll offer it only retail .. no choice.
