Guest guest
Hi Dolores, I do not add a preservative to my herbal salves. I do add rosemary extract and vitamin e as antioxidants. I think if you are using dry herbs for infusing you are less likely to introduce any bacteria rather than using fresh. If you are concerned about the possibility of the introduction of water, you might put on your label that it would contaminate it. I do that on my sugar scrub since I don't use presevatives in that either. I don't know about the tinctures part, but what I have used in my salves are the co2 extracts of calendula, seabuckthorn berry and rosehip seed. I think if I were going to use a tincture I would go for the glycerin based since it might blend a bit better than say the alcohol tinctures. Hope this helped a bit! Guest guest
> > margaret thanks so much for the info. do you think that the co2 extracts are as potent as the glycerin or alcohol extracts where the herb has been soaking for a long time? it sure would make it easier to use them. what i am working on is a baby diaper rash salve and it has calendula, comfrey and marshmallow.....i dont believe these herbs come in a co2. other herbal salves that i am working on contain things like mullen nettle chickweed and again i have never seen a co2 of these. when i get to my face oils and creams i think co2 is the way to go. how much % of roe and vite do you use? how long do they last done this way? if you dont mind me asking where do you get your co2's. i appreciate your taking time to answer me dolores
Guest guest
Hi dolores, I think the co2 extracts are more potent than tinctures and comparable to perhaps eo's. If someone else on here knows any different or better than I hope they would jump right in. Co2 extractions are still pretty new and there are more being introduced. The top 3 are the calendula, seabuckthorn berry and rose hip seed. I have purchased from (and I hope it's okay for on the list) Natures Gift and Camden grey. I make a " Basic Balm " and it is what I use on my little girl's bum. I only use calendula infused sweet almond oil, rosehip seed oil and lavender and lemon eo's (very little). It clears up any redness or irritation overnight. So you might not need to add the extracts or tinctures for that one. Just infused oils. Again, about the chickweed etc.. I use mostly just infused oils for those type balms & salves. I do have a skin care line and the co2's are generally reserved for those creams & lotions. I did make a batch of balm with the co2's and compared that with the other, they had about the same results. Using Roe at .5% to 1% can extend any fragile oils or low shelf life oils to about a year. The mixed vit e, I use at about 1% as well. I also like to add the d-alpha tocopherals for the purpose of moisturizing and healing it contributes, as the mixed do not do that as much. Good luck with it all!
