Guest guest
After that Dr. Seuss subject line that I could not resist.. My house is infested with fleas and they are biting the heck out of me! I'm horribly allergic to the bites, they swell up to the size of a quarter and stay itchy for over a week.. they aren't biting my husband, son or cat.. just me. The fleas are coming in from outside, and I don't want to drench my house in chemicals with a one year old crawling around the floors. Anyone have any remedies for either the itching or to run the little buggers out of my house (and keep them off of me) ? ~*~ Hawke ~*~ Mama to Dourden ShadoWolf (7-10-01)
Guest guest
Hey Hawke, That stinks - one gets spoiled not having to deal with fleas living here at a high altitude (like you did for so long), but now that you're at sea level again you've remembered how they're there with a vengeance, huh? :-( I remember fleas! I feel your pain! I've used powdered pyrethrum flowers in the past to get rid of fleas both by using it as a flea powder on the dog and then sprinkling it onto the rug and vacuuming it up well. Though I'd not let the baby roll around on the rug with the pyrethrum on it. Also, shampooing the rugs is really the best way to get rid of them initially and THEN do the pyrethrum as a maintenance effort. The gal Sevi on this list, from Cybercanine has a natural flea shampoo she sells: http://www.cybercanine.com/srfleashampoo.htm For the bites here are some things I've used that have helped us when the various buggies have bitten: Homeopathic: Ledum tincture to relieve swelling and stinging, Apis ointment for puffiness, cantharis for inflammation .. B & T Sting Stop gel Herbal: Comfrey leaf poultice, chickweed poultice, turmeric powder made into a paste, witch hazel ... Aromatherapy: Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Oil, Honey mixed with one drop Peppermint Oil Common Household Products: Baking soda paste, rubbing alcohol, vinegar, lemon juice, raw potato poultice, raw onion poultice, ice Here are some other ideas from one web site on getting rid of the fleas: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/pets/30 For Fleas from and on Dogs Assuming you don't own a cat, and you keep your windows open when using citrus peel extract products, get rid of fleas in your house by washing floors twice a week with a solution of 1/4 cup citrus peel extract (available in health food stores--citra solve is one brand) in 1 to 2 gallons of water. Spray bedding with a mixture of 2 teaspoons citrus peel extract and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. To make a fur rub for the dog, cut up 4 lemons, and simmer for one hour in 1 quart of water, adding more water as it evaporates. Cool the mixture, strain, and massage into the dog's coat. Note that there are a number of pure citrus-peel-based pet products on the market (see Shop for Supplies, below). For Cats *and* Dogs Herbal repellents work well to repel fleas. Make an herbal infusion by adding a handful of dried herbs (available in most health food stores) to a tea pot and fill with boiling water. Let the " tea " set overnight, and then strain it into a spray bottle. Recommended herbs include southernwood, rue, rosemary, sage, catmint, eucalyptus, and leaves from the black walnut tree. Start with just a small amount to make sure the pet can tolerate the herb. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And then, just for the heck of it I'll just this non natural remedy tip/story. one year back in NYC we had a flea infestation so bad that my poor dog was getting very ill from it. Nothing was helping to rid her of the fleas, so therefore we couldn't de-infest the house either. We broke down and used that stuff " Advantage " from the vet . a little dab went on the nape of her neck and at the base of her tail (she was a big dog, smaller dogs only need it on the neck). That stuff works on a hormonal level that only affect fleas, and it worked very well with no ill effects to anyone, including the dog. It killed them right away on her, and we were then able to de-infest the house at that point and then maintain a flea free household from there. It was a bad year and a hard case for sure! Good luck! Fleas are definitely something ya don't want to just ignore and hope will go away, cause they won't! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com moonflowerhawke [moonflowerhawke] Sunday, August 11, 2002 8:59 PM Help with Fleas, please? Guest guest
I like the Advantage, it worked for us. But be sure if you use it you don't let the baby or any children touch the cat for a few days especially where you put the drops. We used it on our cats and the fleas were gone with no problems to the cats. I have heard of some cats/dogs in the news having problems with it, but as with most news stories, it may have been blown out of proportion Michele -- " chrisziggy " <chrisziggy Mon, 12 Aug 2002 11:16:13 -0600 RE: Help with Fleas, please?
