Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, There's a few things you can do, & they may vary slightly depending on what software you use so you may need to hunt around for options. The first step is to compress your mail folders. Every time you delete an email, it's flagged behind the scenes to get deleted later and it just no longer shows in your email folder. It's all still there taking up room on your harddrive. Compressing the folders (compacting might be the word your program uses) takes all those deleted files out of the mail folder & then shuffles all the emails together so the file isn't full of empty space. You should find the 'compact folders' option in the File Menu. You might have to compact them one folder at a time if your system says it hasn't got enough space to do the lot. Bigger files need more room in the compacting process. Next, spend a bit of time deleting off emails that you know you don't want any more. Any emails with attachments that you want to keep, save the attached files off somewhere and delete the message. If you don't have room on your hard drive to save any attached files, you might have to do that as a later step. Once your hard drive is full it can be tricky to get those emails deleted, as the computer wants space to use temporarily while it does it's processing. If you have lots of email folders, clean out the smallest of them first, then empty trash, then compact them. Now go on to the next biggest mail folder. This deleting & compacting can be time consuming - it's better to do it on a regular basis (once you've got your puter cleaned up a bit!) as mail can build up so quickly !!! Some mail programs can be set to automatically compact the folders so check through your preferences/options & see if you can find the setting. A couple of other things to help keep your hard drive cleaner ..... there is a cache which stores all the images that you download as you visit sites - check in your preferences again for the setting to clear the disk cache. These files just keep building up ! You can also delete them directly from explorer if you know where they're stored.... I know that if you're running Netscape they'll be under your User folder where all your mail is kept. The Windows Temp directory is another place where files can build up & clog up your harddrive. Programs are supposed to clean off their temporary files as they're shut down, but many don't .. slack programming ! Windows itself is also supposed to delete them on shutdown, but doesn't always. I often go to the temp folder and delete off anything that's got a date of earlier than today. Hope this helps !
