Guest guest
Hi Chris, Well, where to start.... My main problem at first is the fact I use a Mac, there are no satellite internet companies that support Macs, right now that is. So we are using my brother's PC as a server. The connection works great...on HIS computer. We're having problems with the other computers networked into the server. And no one can seem to tell us how to fix the problem. He's connected at 768 kbs, but when it filters down through the network, I only get on at 168 kbs. This is better than the dialup at 48 kbs, but nowhere near my old DSL. We installed the Direcway system by Hughes. This is a 2 way system. On a one way system, you only get download and have to use a dialup connection to upload, ugh! Their tech support is pretty good, 24/7 and pretty helpful. The dish is HUGE compared to a TV satellite and you are warned not to get within 6 feet of the dish because of the electromagnetic waves it produces. We are still having problems with the upload, Direcway knows of the problems and is trying to fix it. Our current upload is 28 kbs and it should be 128 kbs. But I just set my FTP program up, start the upload, and go to bed. Then I can post on ebay to my hearts content in the morning. The entire cost for us was $700 including install. I get to write it off as an expense, so that helps. We're also looking at adding the Mac hub that Direcway is coming out with this fall, so maybe that will help my speed. Overall, it's not as good as DSL, but WAY better than dialup Though we are starting to look like we could communicate with Mars at our house, we have a TV satellite dish, an Internet satellite dish, and my brother wants to put up an HDTV dish that looks like something off a Star Trek set! Gotta run, Jordy is waking up and AJ won't take a nap. Someday I'll get my work done, maybe at 3 am??? Glad your move went well, and best of luck with an ISP!
