Guest guest
but I was told over and over again that it was an artificial flavor and was not a true plant. Now I can continue my hunt for the elusive Wintergreen plant. Michele Hey now- just because there is not an authentic " wintergreen oil " on the market- doesnt mean the plant doesnt exist. There is a botanical " wintergreen " family-Pyrolaceae, which includes several flowering evergreen plants which live under mostly conifers- pipsissewa is one of these plants. Then there is the plant that is commonly called wintergreen or checkerberry- botanical name is " Gaultheria procumbens " - this grows in the northeast woods and has an edible berry- this is the plant that the supposed " wintergreen oil " would come from, and that wintergreen artificial flavor is modeled after. This plant is in the heath family(Ericaceae)- which includes bearberry(uva ursi).... Not really at all like mints... but a true plant indeed... Guest guest
Thank you for the information. I had (erroneously) assumed that since it was similar in " flavor " to a mint that it was in the same family. Now I am armed with the Latin name and can go forth and obtain some " wintergreen " for myself! -- " Michelle Morton-niyama " <lakshmi Tue, 11 Jun 2002 17:09:54 -0400 wwintergreen but I was told over and over again that it was an artificial flavor and was not a true plant.
