Guest guest
Hi there, I hope someone can pass on to me a good recipe for a soothing ointment... My miniature Schnauzer has allergies so bad right now...we have not had much rain and the pollen and grass is about to kill him...He has chewed his legs and butt and now has tender hot spots... He is on antibiotics for the skin infection and antihistamines to try to stop the itching...but he still needs something to put on his skin to sooth it...I'm bathing him every 3 days but you know how your skin feels if it is too dry or burning...a nice lotion or ointment would bring some relieve.. I have lots of supplies for making lotion or ointment...I would prefer an ointment I think since they seem to stay on better... I have beeswax, all kinds of EO's, several bulk herbs and alot different oils.. Any recipe would be appreciated and especially from someone that has animals that have had similar problems.. Blessings, Stephanie
Guest guest
Stephanie , I would try some Bag Balm, it is great for some really nasty conditions. Should be able to get it at your feed store or any farm and ranch supply. The problem with most hot spots is that need to dry them up quickly so infection doesn't get started. I'm surprised your vet didn't give you something for that. Did your vet give him a shot of Cortisone? As for the allergies I would try making a tea with Mullein, Boneset, and Chamomile. Mix the three herbs together using 1/3 parts, then take 1 teaspoon of the mixed herbs and pour over with one cup hot water. Let it sit for 20 minutes covered, strain off the herbs, cool, then give him 1 teaspoon 3 - 4 times a day, keeping the stock in the refrig during the day. Mix a new cup of tea each day. If you don't see improvement within 3 day, you may have to try a different combination of herbs. You could also use Chamomile Flowers, Calendula Flowers, and Witch Hazel Bk mixed externally. Make a tea with the same direction as above except this time let it sit for 30 minutes. Use 1 - 1 1/2 teaspoon herbs to 1 cup hot water. Use a cotton ball and dab on the sores. Use hourly when the hot spots are at there worst. One other thing you could try, but your going to have to have a good relationship with your dog to do this, because your going to have to hold the pill in your dog's mouth until it dissolves. The pill needs to enter the blood stream not the stomach to work properly. Were talking Homeopathy, two remedies you could try, but not together, they are: Hepar Sulfuris Calcareum and Sulfur. Follow the directions on the bottle. Both these remedies are for the sores. Good Luck, Rick
Guest guest
An easy way of doing this is to crush the pill between two teaspoons and sprinkle it on the dogs tongue and then hold his mouth closed for just a short while. I've done this and it works wonderfully. Homeopathy is very powerful (but very gentle)and sometimes an animal only needs to just touch the pill with its tongue for it to have an effect. Guest guest
I have a black lab mix that, when tested, peaked out everything she was tested for except for molds and spores. Trees, grasses, weeds, basically she's allergic to all plant life. The most soothing thing I've made that really works for her is emu oil, with a dab of lavender and tea tree essential oils. The essential oils don't bother her the way the actual plants do. She will try to lick it off, so when I'm done rubbing it onto her stomach, ears, whatever, I rub my fingers on some reachable, unaffected part - like her leg above her paw. This usually clears up any rashes on her within a day. If the spots are very raw, go very easy on the tea tree. (I only use 4 or 5 drops each eo to 2 oz. of emu - and also use it myself on burns, insect bites, etc.) We have tried everything the vet has to offer, even remedies out of the Drs. Foster & Smith catalog and this works the best so far. She was on prednisone for about 5 years and totally blimped out - we changed her food (IVD, available through the vet) and now she gets by with Temaril-P, which has only a tiny bit of steroids. Hope this helps!
