Butch,

I noticed you own property in Oregon. Have you ever been to the Breitenbush

Hot Springs Retreat and Conference Center? Great place to soak, and they only

charge $8.00 for the day.

We took a 3 month camping trip this past summer and fall living in a tent,

spending most of the time throughout Washington and Oregon. While on our trip

we learned about Hot Springs, both commercial and free (you find them out in

the woods). I only wish I had started getting into the Hot Spring thing years

ago while I was younger.

Here's a few web sites for hot springs:

Michele,

Are you talking about the Mc Credie hot springs near Oakridge on the side of

Rt. 58?

That was an experience, went there while it was raining figuring I'd be

alone. I guess

that's what everyone else thought. There's a free hot spring's near the river

just about a mile from Breitenbush. Let me if you want directions. We stay at

Creators Bend

along the river just about a mile from Breitenbush in late September, froze

our asses off. We were even using a tent heater and still froze. But going to

the springs was well worth it. Another springs we enjoyed was the Olympic hot

springs in the Olympic National Park near Port Angeles, WA. The bad part was

the hour or so hike

all up hill, take a bike for the down hill ride back.

I'm looking forward to going back to Breitenbush this summer, it's a real

treat and the people are so friendly and nice there. I was very surprised!

I grew up in Lake Oswego in the late 60's, and was very shocked by the growth

on this last visit, even got lost twice. Take Care, Rick

You know, I live here and I've never been there. I've put in a few hints to

DH though. I have been to the hot springs in the area, we used to stop off

at some hot springs on the side of the road near there. After a week of

camping, we needed a good soak in the water. That area is a BEAUTIFUL part

of Oregon, I love the Detroit Lake area.

Did you camp at Olallie lake? I grew up camping there every year. I love

the place because they don't allow motorized boats of any kind. It's so

nice and peaceful. My best memory is floating out in the lake, trout line

in the water, watching a bald eagle soar overhead.

:)

Michele (who will go back camping AFTER the kids are out of diapers!)

Breitenbush is lovely and they have a great annual herbal conference

there...

Mccredie is just a bit too accessable...

as well as Cougar which is beautiful but has been sadly overrun.

The ones that you have to hike into are the best- that weeds out the , er,

well, most undesirables.

There are some hot springs outside of roseburg near crater lake called the

toketee or umpqua hot springs- amazing!

Up on the side of the river bed, with travertine dripping from all

sides...and the river was COLD! and blue green...and there were delicious

cold springs gushing forth on the other side of the river.

Aaah Oregon...love that place-

We camped there last summer on our way to Vermont...my favorite spot was on

the side of the Mckenzie River a couple hours east of Eugene. WOW

All kinds of healing plants live there- they kind of tickle you and say

hello as you blissfully walk through the woods!

Now if only Oregon werent on top of the " ring of fire! " That is some

powerful land and that geology is indeed why there are hot springs...

I do think Id like to check out Arkansas at some point....

Good day

Michelle

All this talk of hot springs and of my beautiful state make me very glad I

live here. I sometimes take my surroundings for granted. I am fortunate to

have inherited my parent's 34 acres in the foothills of the Coast Range and

as I sit here typing this I am watching a deer cavort in my backyard. My

brother, DH and I are working as hard as we can to obtain more land around

our property. It is very sad that many people are inheriting the land next

to us, clear cutting it, selling the trees, then selling the land for more

houses. :( I am very intent on saving a piece of land next to us that has

a wonderful creek and waterfall. The old growth cedar along the banks are

truly majestic. But I won't get into my feelings on forest management, it

would make this e-mail WAY too long!

I think this summer, I'll pack up the family and head to the hot springs, it

is a bit of a drive for us, about 3-4 hrs I think, but worth the trip. And

hey, living in the " ring of fire " isn't all that bad. Mt St Helens only

dumped an inch or so of ash on us (22 years ago this Saturday) , and the

" Spring Break Quake " didn't do too much damage ;) I have been in much worse

quakes when I was in Japan

:)
