Guest guest
Can any other oil be substituted for palm oil in soap? What properties should I look for? I'm planning for my very first batch of from-scratch soap this week (cp)! Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Why not palm? It offers a nice hard bar of soap. It cleans and is mild to the skin. If you use to much coconut in soap then you will have a bar that is drying to the skin. That's where palm comes in. But it can be done without it. I make a " Baby Buttermilk " bar that is mostly olive oil and a little coconut (for the lather) and it is a decent bar of soap. However you could add a smidge of cocoa butter to harden the soap and make it moisturizing to boot. Did you get your book? If you did then go to page 96 and look at the chart for characteristics of the oils. Whatever recipe you come up with go to MMS and run it through their lye calculator to get the right % of lye to use for whatever your oils/fats are. Good luck, have fun and let us know how it turns out! Margaret > >Can any other oil be substituted for palm oil in soap? What properties >should I look for? Guest guest
Hi Margaret, I've been reading my book this morning and didn't get to p.96 yet, but it's a goodie! Thanks! The reason not palm is simply b/c I don't have any and I'm itchy to get started, but I really think I'll have to wait until I have all the right ingredients. I do have cocoa butter, but I think not enough for a whole batch. Off to place another order, lol! Thanks! Guest guest
Cavitch Miller says to use no more than 30% coconut oil in your batch of soap. Recent folks say no more than 25%, some say no more than 20%. The best bet is try it for yourself and see what YOU like. Coconut oil make a high lather, whereas palm or palm kernel makes a lower lather. As in bubbles. Coconut is lots of fluffy bubbles. Palm is lots of thick bubbles. Any oil that is hard will contribute to making the bars hard. Coconut, palm kernel, shea butter, cocoa butter. Janine www.HerbaTherapy.com join the newsletter for specials! Guest guest
Deb, you can use what you have. I *thought* I needed palm kernel when I first started too. But you don't. Just make up your own recipe and go for it, using the mms calc. Make 1# if that's all you have! That's what size my first one was. Janine www.HerbaTherapy.com join the newsletter for specials! Guest guest
But don't confuse Palm and Palm Kernal. Palm Kernal can interchange with coconut not Palm.
