Are you quiet 'cos you're out in the spring garden working? Here in Scotland spring is always quite late. Down in England the daffodils are nearly finished, whereas ours are in full bloom and looking so lovely. We're still getting frosts at night, but days are around 9 - 13 centigrade - if we're lucky. We've had a lot of rain but today looks good, sun just breaking through and the wind's dropped. I have been working on soy and beeswax candles, new scent combinations, trying to keep up with all the ideas that have come my way. The R & D has taken over 3 rooms out of 7. BUT It was 60 degrees(F) all weekend and yes we are out in the yard working working. We bought this old house that someone cared for long ago but it has been neglected for many years- so starting a garden from scratch, really. It looks like there are lots of peonies in one area- and some kind of bulb is taking off rapidly....It will be neat to see what comes up. Planted a bunch of seeds on Saturday(day after the new moon) Calendula, echinacea,chamomile(matricaria), to name a few... Yesterday we built a sandbox for the boy... We are trying to get an old wooden fence down so that we can lay a block one. Didn't need to much to take the old one down the wind took care of it for us. May be coming your way. Flowers are trying to come up and I figure my Tiger Lilies will bloom here is a week or so along with my Easter Lilies. Cana's are not ready just yet but I give them another month or so before they come up. The daffodils have already bloomed and are disappearing. I am by no means a gardener, but I did plant some calendula, lemon balm, peppermint and a comfrey last year. I have daffodils that have come and are going and tulips are in full bloom everywhere. I have even seen some iris in bloom. I had planted the one comfrey plant in a pot and it never made it in the ground so thought it was a goner after all the cold weather. I was so delighted to go look around outside last week. The comfrey made it and is sprouting up, the calendula re-seeded and is growing again and the lemon balm has completely taken over the cedar planter it's in. I am so excited that I have things growing! That means the busy season is near! Happy Spring to everyone! Guest guest Posted April 16, 2002 Report Share Posted April 16, 2002 It's really interesting to hear what the weather is like for everyone else, and also how sudden some of the temperature changes are. Ours creep up gradually - (with hiccups of course now and then) but are fairly predictable and not as extreme as some of you are talking about, The 80's are reserved for some days in high summer in England, but very rarely in Scotland, and it isn't often, even up here in the north that the temperature drops below, say -6 in the winter, and that would be at night. Rain - well it's never far away. We complain when it rains, and then if it gets really dry in the summer we complain again! Weather is supposed to be the favourite topic of conversation here!!! what a waste of energy. I'm off to see if the comfrey has pushed through yet and to look at the primroses and cowslips.
