Guest guest
Hiya Chris Well this does of course refer to shippping within one country!!! but if I post things in Uk first I make sure they are a healthy plant, then they've got the best chance I wrap the roots in kitchen roll and soak it I then put that part into a polythene bag and try to seal it so the whole parcel doesn't get wet! Then, well, it all depends on the size of the plant. Postal tubes are good for dropping plants down into and will protect the foliage otherwise use something like corrugated cardboard to protect the plant and then send it first class post! Of course, that's something probably peculiar to the UK First class post means it should be delivered the next day Second class costs less and takes anything between 2 and 5 days I certainly would go for 24 or 48 hour delivery for a plant Gee, ain't I rambling on Am off down south (Cambridge) tomorrow, to see daughter and stay weekend and then on Tuesday to what could be a real fiiery (that doesn't look right!) meeting of our aromatherapy association. Here in UK we have three main associations and we are about to merge into one. There are just a few that want to upset the applecart (good English saying) and you can bet they'll be there. Call an extra-ordinary meeting of 1900 people, 60 - 70 - say they they'll come and most of them want to make trouble. I'm on the Council of this association but am looking forward to not being, for all the hassle I get. That of course has nothing at all to do with plants. On another subject - Janet has all these lovely candles for sale and the shipping just spoils the whole thing! One day I'll have to come over there and just travel around, meet all of you, and collect goodies on all my visits!!! Seriously I really enjoy this group 'cos it's friendly. Chris - David (husband) says " wonder if Chris realizes that Scotland is about a third the size of Colarado? " Best regards to you all Ann - Scotland

Guest guest
Yo Chris, Not sure exactly what kinda live you are talking about .. or what kinda plants .. it'll make a difference. Matters what time of year you are shipping too. > Hiya > > I know a few folks here ship live plants (professionally or otherwise) > and I was wondering if y'all have any tips ya could share about doing > it. The Damask Rose is one of the few that can grow from cuttings or its own root stock .. Couple of years ago, I shipped a couple of metric tons of Rosa damascena roots and cuttings to a USAID project in Madagascar. I had been waiting for Fall to ship'em because its the safest time to take them from the ground and/or clip the cuttings. We wrapped them in damp burlap and what I think is called Vermiculite. Wrapped that in plastic sheeting and put them in many coffin-like boxes around 3' X 5'. Shipped them via DHL cause it was gonna be a long trip anyway .. had to go from Ankara to Paris and then via Air France on to Madagascar. Took 7 days to get there even with DHL because Madagascar is sho'nuf off the beaten path. Anyway .. the rate of sprouting was around 90% or so .. so I guess we got lucky .. especially since we were just guessing at how we should do it as there had NEVER been an export of Rosa damascena plants from here. They said it was prohibited .. and it was enjoyable proving them wrong. Second year, they didn't do so good. The USAID, like most government agencies, has to say they are doing something even if its wrong .. in the first place, I told them it was too hot and too low in Madagascar but they had money in the pot (I reckon) and had to spend it on what appeared to be a worthy cause. I am a worthy cause. Bottom line .. you will NEVER see a Rose Otto Origin Madagascar .. ;-p Y'all keep smiling, Butch http://www.AV-AT.com > *Smile* > Chris (list mom) > > Aromatic Easter Baskets > Order Now For Easter Delivery > http://www.alittleolfactory.com
