Guest guest
Hello All, I searched for pure aloe vera and could not find it so I purchased some plants- nice big ones on sale for $3 Can I extract the gel and preserve it? I also splurged on 2 Calamondin orange trees, so fingers crossed I don't doom them, one has fruit on it and the other has blooms, is the fruit edible? Thank-you Emryldgea
Guest guest
" Can I extract the gel " Yes. " and preserve it? " No. When kept inside, the aloe plants will grow all year round. Fresh crystals (the gel inside) are better than the juiced and preserved version any day. And by trimming the plant on a regular basis you will promote a fuller, healthier plant. If the plants are too big to keep inside right now, they can be cut back pretty severally and still be fine. Just take the outer leaves, not the inside. You can scrape the leaves, and keep the crystals for a couple of days in Tupperware in the fridge. If you don't have any other use for it, make up some hand cream. Hand cream made with fresh aloe vera is the best! Add some other fats/oils of some sort, and whatever eos, herbs, you want, and use the aloe vera as the water phase. Then keep it in the fridge or add a preservative. Guest guest
" What would I use as a preservative in a hand cream? " Well, that is sort of a loaded question. First, do you need a synthetic preservative or a natural one? Then, if going natural, are you going for an anti-oxidant, or anti-bacterial, or what? Or, if going synthetic, do you know the pH of your cream and what kind of microbes will grow in there? Etc, etc, etc. There just is no easy answer to this question. And I don't think there is one less than 5 pages long either. So, I will refer you to the list archives. Search the archives for preservative, and you will come up with plenty of info. But to save you a bit of time, if it is only for you, I would make it an enjoyable experience and put the stuff in the fridge:) Blessings, Soseneda AIM: SosenedaA ICQ: 47264444 : soseneda_arianrhod MSN: Soseneda
