Guest guest
I really love the smell of vanilla and I want to add it to all of my personal products. Does anyone think that it would be a bad idea to use vanilla extract? I recently purchased some vanilla absolute and it is horrible!!! It does not smell like vanilla and it looks like tar. Guest guest
Hello Selket, You will probably need to dilute the absolute right down before the true vanilla scent presents itself - it is *very* concentrated in that form !! Try getting just a bit on the tip of a toothpick & sitting it in 5 or 10ml of either a carrier oil or alcohol. It might take a bit of swirling around to get it to dissolve .. then see if you still think it's horrible. If it is, go back to your supplier! But odds are that you'll find the vanilla you love hidden inside that lump of tar ! Good luck! Jane :-)) selketqt wrote: > I really love the smell of vanilla and I want to add it to all of my > personal products. Does anyone think that it would be a bad idea to > use vanilla extract? Guest guest
It's very very strong and only needs just the tiniest bit and I'm sure that tiny bit would smell good! Regards Ann- Scotland
Guest guest
I have used both the absolute and an extract in a cream. The cream I made with the extract didn't smell quite as nice. You can still smell the alcohol or something. I left it to sit for several months and checked it and the cream was fine and it still smelled of vanilla but I could still tell their was alcohol in it too. You can tell a difference on your skin as well. Margaret > >I really love the smell of vanilla and I want to add it to all of my >personal products. Guest guest
Thanks Margaret, have you ever made your own? Is this a good idea? Can you open a vanilla bean and put it in some jojoba oil, let it sit for awhile (???) and then use this as a bath oil or addition to creams and lotions? Guest guest
Hi Selket, If you're going to dissolve it in alcohol, make sure it's the denatured kind, or even evercleer if you can't get denatured, in other words, one that won't smell like rubbing alcohol? Or cheap booze... Guest guest
There was an interesting article on Vanilla in the March 2002 issue of Bon Appetit. I didn't have a chance to read it in detail but it did say when buying the beans look for beans over 5 " long which is when they reach their maturity. They did recommend not to buy if they were cut up. It did explain the great effort required to grown vanilla beans and how labor intensive it is. ~Tricia - " selketqt " <selketqt Monday, February 18, 2002 8:49 AM Re: Vanilla... again > Thanks Margaret, have you ever made your own? Guest guest
I haven't infused any beans yet, but will someday. I think it's a great idea! I just haven't wanted to shell out the bucks for the beans without really knowing where to get the best. Since being on this list I am learning that Chris usually has some on her site. Maybe she'll be willing to share some instructions with us. You most definately can use an infused oil for your lotions, creams or bath oil. Have fun with it and let us know how it turns out! Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, I couldn't find Everclear here, so I got Golden Grain. It's 190 proof. It came from a liquor store, so I'm assuming it's not rubbing alcohol??? Guest guest
Hi Tricia, hmmmm, just went to the website *thinking I could get a sneak peek at the article* no such luck. I wonder if they mention anything about what you can make with the beans? I guess a trip to the library is in order. Guest guest
Hi Margaret, thanks. What I did was to cut one bean in half and I split one half open and scraped the beans out and put it all in jojoba, the other half I just put in some jojoba. I'm liking the scent of them both, but the piece that I split open is fantastic! Do you or anyone think that the beans have to be strained out? Or could I just use the entire mixture once it has " cured " long enough? Most of the beans settled at the bottom of the jar, so it shouldn't be " too " hard. *wondering what I would use to strain those micro beans out* Selket , " Margaret Helm-Duell " <naturalindulgences@h...> wrote: > > > I haven't infused any beans yet, but will someday. Guest guest
Selket I am pretty sure they were some vanilla recipes in there. Next time your at the check out aisle or magazine section of your grocery store, you might want to peruse the article. I will ask my girlfriend for her mag when she is done with it and see if I can post it. Chris post mentioned a few things that were also in the Bon Apetit article. ~Tricia - " selketqt " <selketqt Tuesday, February 19, 2002 7:29 AM Re: Vanilla... again > Hi Tricia, hmmmm, just went to the website *thinking I could get a > sneak peek at the article* no such luck. Guest guest
Tricia, I got a copy of the recipe already. LOL, I don't play when it comes to Vanilla! I'm trying the Hot Chocolate With Vanilla Whipped Cream recipe later today. Thanks.
