Hi. I am not very good at reading all of the daily digests that come across my

computer, so please forgive me if I am repeating anything that has transpired

recently. I received a phone call today from a woman who knows me from the

soaps and lavender pillows that I make every fall. She has a friend who is in

desperate need of an ointment that contains comfrey (anti-inflammatory) that she

had purchased 3 years ago from a crabby lady who she doesn't want to do business

with. What is going on is this woman in her 70s has severe circulatory problems

in her feet that have led to swelling and cracking. Her doctor is concerned

that if the cracking continues she is going to get infections in her feet and

worse things could happen from there. The salve that the woman's friend shared

with her before did the trick of relieving the pain, swelling and cracking that

she was experiencing, when over-the-counter salves couldn't help at all. They

have asked me to make something for the friend to try, and I am respectfully

asking for my listmates to share their knowledge with me so I might help a

suffering woman. Please, help if you can! Thanks!

Comfrey does great in salves. The basic formula is infuse your comfrey

in a base oil, then strain and add beeswax, pour into pots and let cool.

It sounds like the salve she had might have had more than comfrey in it.

I make and anti-inflammatory and skin moisturizing salve with comfrey in

it called Super Skin. It is $4.00 for a 3 oz jar.

If you just want to make her a salve of comfrey, then you can do it

yourself if you have some comfrey on hand (I carry that too, if you need

it; $0.75/oz for cut and sift leaves).

Put about a half ounce of comfrey (use an ounce of fresh herb, and

bruise it first) into a cup of oil. Heat the oil with the herb in it. I

would use safflower, olive, or jojoba (for longest lasting). Heat the

oil to just under 115 degrees and hold it there for about twenty

minutes. Then put the herb and oil in a jar and seal it up tight and let

cool overnight.

Next day strain the oil through cheesecloth and squeeze the left over

herb good and hard to get the last of the oil out of it. Heat the oil

back up, and add oh around 2-3 ounces of beeswax (carry that stuff too,

if ya want it; beads, white for $3.00/ounce, or pounds, yellow for

$12.00) and melt the beeswax down. Stir well after it has melted for

about two minutes, then pour or ladle into pots and let cool. You may

wish to add a bit of liquid glycerin to the mix for her.

If you want to add eos to the salve, add them soon after you pour into

the pots. That way they wont evaporate too much. Tea tree would help

fight those infectious problems.
