If you use cheap alcohol, it's still cheap alcohol. I tried to cut expenses

and use the store brand 100 proof vodka and I could taste the difference.

Also, sometimes it burns and could stomach backup for lack of a better term.

That yuck feeling in your esophagus just before it hits your stomach. I

switched back to Smirnoff and it's much better. All the other problems went

away. If I hit the lottery, I'll use Stoly 100 proof Gold as that is really

the smooth one. ;-)

There is a difference in your carrier oils and some are better for different

things. Some have longer shelf lives and some smell better than others. I

know there are some others on the list that know the carriers well so

hopefully they'll post.

Have a wonderful day.

Just my opinion

Hi all,

I have 2 questions:

I know that some carrier oils are more expensive than others, but are there

some that are better with certain herbs/oils or better for certain

conditions than others?

Also, if I'm making a tincture, does the quality of the booze make a

difference in the quality of the tincture?

Thanks,

Denise

Personally I find ( as does many herbalists books I have read ) that plain

cheap vodka works just as well as anything else.

Very much so. The chemical makeup of the herb and of the oil need to

'mesh' to get a good infusion. Certain oils penetrate the skin better

than others. Start reading books/websites and taking notes, and taking

notes on everything you make and how it works when you try it.

If you are going to take the tincture (drop it on your tongue), then

pick a booze you like, or at least can stomach!

Otherwise, alcohol to water ratio is the same, it is the other

ingredients and the purity of the alcohol that make one better than the

other. I like Absolut Vodka (I also drink it, so it is always around)

and Everclear. For the must be smooth stuff I like Sky Vodka. Just

depends on what you want it for in the end.

And most homemade tinctures are not very precise anyways. Especially if

you are going with the fill the jar with herbs, top with alcohol

method:)
