Glitter/mica colorants for lip balms

Greetings everyone and Happy MLK Day. I was wondering if anyone has any

experience using glitter and/or mica colorants for lip balms. If so, I would

very much appreciate any tips. I haven't ordered anything yet but hope to do

so soon. I've noticed that glitters have different sizes using a two-number

method of measurement. What do these numbers mean indicate? I'm sure I

would use the small size for lip balms, but what numbers would that correlate

to? Thanks.

I haven't used the colorants, but I have used micas in my lotions and

some of my cosmetics (lip sticks, blushes, and eye shadows).

I would think the colorants would work the same as powdered colorants,

only mica is already mixed in.

If you want a shimmer, use micas. If you want perceptible chunks of

glitter, use glitter. I personally have never gone for the glitter look,

so have never used it.

As for the numbers, the higher the number, the finer the powder. I

finish off my product, sometimes before it has cooled. Then stir in

however much mica I think looks right:) and pour into pots and cool.

Then I usually dust the top of each pot with an extra layer of mica to

get it to sell better.

I dust them with a big blush makeup brush after it has set-up. People

can then see the shimmer better and are more likely to buy. If you put

enough mica in the product to get that top layer of shimmer, the stuff

will be like caked mica goo:)

Thank you Soseneda. That is very helpful! Just curious - how well are your

cosmetics selling? I've been interested in making my own some day. Perhaps

you could share some recipes or books or sites.

Oh, they sell fairly well. I sell them mostly to belly dancers at

seminars and workshops. They don't use them for stage work of course (I

carry a ben nye line too), but they find them a gentle alternative to

daily stuff.

Most cosmetics are very similar to lotions or balms with colorants. The

powdered stuff is more like incense:)

Lipstick is simply a thick lip balm with colorant in it. Blush is more

of a cream, and eye shadow is usually a light lotion.
