Try Tea tree oil neat.

or Geranium and it's best to put it on with a cotton bud. You'll find the Tea

Tree especially will be very drying but it should work (some folk have quite a

sensitivity to Tea Tree) If you find that your lip and surrounding area is very

dry and scaly after using, I'd try something else next time

Good luck - I hate them too and have to confess (aromatherapist that I am) that

I use Zovirax!

A lemon balm leaf, ( Melissa ) , or lemon balm tea bags on the sore will

help...maybe a lotion or salve from the lemon balm, or even a wash, but I

would try something that stayed on there for awhile

What are the cold sores from?

Cold sores are a sort of side effect type symptom of other problems in

the body. Treating the cold sore will relieve the pain, but it will just

come back again if the underlying cause is not eliminated.

I don't know. I seem to have some kind of mild infection. Today I noticed

a swollen gland underneath my chin, so I figure I have a low-grade infection

Have you tried the good old stand by of Echinacea and goldenseal?

(nature's anti-biotic)

Warm mint or clove tea bags on your cold sore would be helpful. Don't

take goldenseal if you are pregnant or nursing! It may cause you to

bleed a bit when you first start it (menstrual bleeding).

Somewhere in the back of my head I am hearing lavender oil, but I cant

think of why that would work, maybe someone else here can say yay or nay

to that. :)

do remember, that once you have the herpes virus (cold sore) then it will always

be with you.

Also that they are very easy to pass on, so kissing etc is out! especially with

children because they then have them for life (I don't mean kissing's out

forever - just while the cold sore is there!!!)

Something just seems to trigger that virus to become active again, sometimes

it's an infection, sometimes it's the sun and very often it's when you're

stressed - just to make you feel worse.

If you use eo's - Tea Tree (I hate it) or Geranium are generally accepted as

useful for this, apply with a cotton bud so that you keep the oil just on the

sore, and if you touch the sore with you finger, do wash your hands after and

don't touch other parts of y our face because that's a way of spreading it

Herpes zoster is the virus that causes shingles

Herpes simplex is the one that causes cold sores

Thanks for the info Ann, I learn something new from someone on this list

every day. There are no books that could teach me as much as I have learned

already or will learn in the future. Deonia

If you have the herpes virus, sometimes the cold sores are the only

indicator of a breakout. It can be accompanied by fatigue and a slight

fever. Sometimes loose bowels can precede an outbreak.

If your cold sores are not due to the herpes virus they would not be

recurring. In this case they are usually a result of internal infection.

Cold sores here are grouped in the same category with boils and

abscesses. It is the often the result of an overworked lymphatic system.

Our lymphatic system works to cleanse the blood and remove excess

liquids.

The lymphatic system can become overtaxed when we become over 'toxined.'

This is very directly related to your diet. Usually the body becomes

toxic due to a large volume of red meats, heavily fatty or greasy foods,

vinegar and pickles, milk fats, refined sugars, and artificial

preservatives, additives and colorings.

The most common method recommended for a mild diet de-tox when the

lymphatic system is failing is fasting for a couple of days, then adding

in fresh fruits, and lots of them. Then slowly adding foods one at a

time (in groups), fresh veggies come next, then mild grains, then beans,

then white meat and fish if you want.

Monitor progress by feeling the glands under your neck, on the side of

your breasts and in your groin. They should be soft when healthy. They

will be hard and hot and very tender to the touch when they are infected

or overworking.
