Guest guest
Howdy A friend of mine is pregnant(like me) and was experiencing some cramping(not active contractions, just " growing pains " ) Anyway- a local herbalist gave her an oil that consisted on infused ginger, some other mild herbs like plantain, and peppermint and mugwort EOs... I told my friend to be very careful with it, and told her about mugwort and its actions and chemistry... It smelled like there was very little in it, but I would not personally make a blend like this for a pregnant woman... Other opinions? Thanks Michelle

Guest guest
Nope, that oil shouldn't be in a blend for a preggie lady ... in fact every variety of Mugwort listed in Syllah Shepard Hangar's book " Aromatherapy Practitioner's Reference Manual Vol. 1. " is contraindicated for pregnancy. Granted, sniffing a little of any EO will not dislodge a healthy fetus from a healthy mom's body, but there is some stuff you just don't want to take chances with - even if not for fear of miscarriage, but just not wanting to have some of those chemical exposed to your's/baby's system (like the potentially neurotoxic thujone in the white mugwort variety). *Smile* Chris (list mom) (No offense, but her " herbalist " sounds like a weekend warrior herbalist - ya know the type " I took a weekend workshop class on herbs so that means I am an herbalist " ) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Michelle Morton-niyama wrote: > Howdy > A friend of mine is pregnant(like me) and was experiencing some > cramping(not active contractions, just " growing pains " ) > Anyway- a local herbalist gave her an oil that consisted on infused > ginger, some other mild herbs like plantain, and peppermint and > mugwort EOs... > I told my friend to be very careful with it, and told her about > mugwort and its actions and chemistry... > It smelled like there was very little in it, but I would not > personally make a blend like this for a pregnant woman... > Other opinions? > Thanks > Michelle >
Guest guest
Hiya Michelle, Even if the herbalist is also trained as an aromatherapist and there are those that are... but - then you'd assume that they'd know better? No way would you use mugwort in pregnancy.............just my opinion, course it's backed up by my courses of study as well as Sylla Sheppherd-Hanger's book and several others...........which is an eo's book, but it's also in the herbal texts. Problem is.. how do you tell a friend not to trust an herbalist she may really trust, huh? Good luck ........... I have nothing on Mugwort , but it just doesn't sound right to me, and all my books say peppermint should be avoided during pregnancy- even YL's ( Don't Laugh,it was a gift ) EO desk reference list peppermint and ginger as oils to avoid while pregnant, although I can see if someone was trained properly they would be able to assess the person and prepare it properly. I personally would not use such a blend for a pregnant person, but I probably would not use anything on a pregnant person - would not want anything I did to harm a baby. I am over cautious, I make blends for my family and friends who I know and get feedback from, a friend with breast cancer & 5 kids really wanted a massage, and I checked with 3 different people, one was a aromatherapist & healer, one was a RN and studied in EOs and the other a massage therapist, 3 different opinions due to the chemo- one was ultra conservative- no masssages for a cancer patient, one was semi- conservative a very dilutted lavender only, and the other sent me a recipe - sorry I deleted it but it included carrot EO and about 4 others( safe or not I was uncomfortable) Emryldgea
Guest guest
Hi Emryldgea, All - HAPPY FRIDAY! Just to clarify .... I have no problem with workshop classes and the " weekend warriors " who attend them .. been one myself many times on many topics ... *LOL* .. I only can't stand it when the greenhorns go around setting up shop, impersonating some kind of medical professional and end up scaring away/harming the masses And I agree, better in most cases to be overly cautious than under! *Smile* Chris (list mom) PS - and I won't laugh at ya for having the YL Desk Reference book .. it serves some great purposes in the word ... like - it is an excellent sopurce of kindling for a fireplace if ya have one - or here's another use - we ALL need a doorstop somewhere in the house, right?! Have a GREAT weekend folks! http://www.alittleolfactory.com > > > Well- humbly as I may be a " weekend warrior " oh no! > I have nothing on Mugwort , but it just doesn't sound right to me, > and all my books say peppermint should be avoided during pregnancy- > even YL's ( Don't Laugh,it was a gift ) EO desk reference list > peppermint and ginger as oils to avoid while pregnant, although I > can see if someone was trained properly they would be able to assess > the person and prepare it properly. Chris, How bout in your woodstove - could make a lot of ash with that book, huh? <grin> And good for you, Emryldgea, you're being overly cautious (like me) and that's part of everything we should all stand for - first and foremost, Do No Harm, way to go!
