In the shiatsu tradition we two study the object is to find which of the Elements the client is most jitsu (excess) and most kyo (deficient). One can attempt to sedate the most jitsu but the most effective method suggested by Masunaga is to attempt to tonify the most kyo. (I should mention that I realize Masunaga isn't standard TCM theory. I'm not here to confuse the other students.) The client's whole hara might be more jitsu in relationship to mine but there will be elements/pathways of energy presented by their hara that are more kyo than their more jitsu. I must admit that since the grand bulk of people who come to my futon are middle aged women the first time I had a client in her early 20s I was quite impressed by the over all magnitude of ki expressed in her hara. That was a subjective anticipation on my part. Realizing that gave me a barometer of how much of my own personal and cultural ego had entered the practice. If the client's hara was indeed a reflection of the universe, her ability to accommodate the universe would be reflected there as well. That acknowledged, there was a kyo to be found and that is where we went in the session. Penel
