Hi Chanalee,

I am a mother of 11 yr old daughters and a practitioner of 12 years

(acupuncture and herbs). I first needled one of my daughters for severe ear

infection due to teething, with high fever etc at the age of 18 months. It

was an instant success in that all signs and symptoms disappeared within 3

to 5 minutes, and didnot return. Since this time i have had the opportunity

to needle babies from a few months old and up. For ear infections of any

etiology a fine gauge half inch needle iserted into the hand on the side of

the infection at Triple Heater 3 with holding in place (i manipulate qi at

this time) and then withdrawn after about the count of 10 etc depends on the

distress of the child. Make sure the baby is sitting on the knee of the

mother, being comforted and do not show the baby/child the needle, hold it

behind your back. Hold the babies hand and talk with soothing tones. Insert

the needle, retain for a few seconds, then withdraw.

The ear infection will be clear within minutes if not immediately.

For ear infection due to mucous/head cold then this must be followed up

within 24 hours with some herbal childrens formulas for windcold/heat etc.

One anecdote was when i treated a child of approx. 3 years of age with

severe ear infection on a weekend nite. I was at dinner with a friend when

this person called to visit with their child on the way to hospital. I

treated the child and the child was immediately relieved of pain etc. and

began to run aroound and laugh and play with other children, so the parents

relaxed and stayed on to join us for dinner. Of course the child was sick

again the following day after stayingup till 11 pm the night before!

Best Wishes

Anita

children, including infants, is to employ simple touch/massage techniques.

The younger the child, the less developed their nervous system. They need

touch to build their synapses and thus respond well to stroking techniques.

The most important area to lightly stroke for throat/ear infections is the

SCM muscle from just behind the ear down to the sternal/clavicle attachment.

You can also rub and apply gentle acupressure to the lung/wind area of the

thoracic spine (and surrounding) and the wrists by Lu 7. You should also

teach the baby's parents to do this several times a day. A great adjunct to

this method is to add a few drops (very few) of a good herbal liniment,

especially one called (believe it or not) Po Sum On. Po Sum On is the

Chinese Vicks Vapo-rub. A drop or two of this oil as a massage oil works

very well with the stroking techniques mentioned above. If the infant is

breastfeeding, have the mom take the same herbs you would have her take for

those sings/symptoms. You can also give an infant 1-2 drops of herbal

formulas as tinctures such as those sold by Far East Summit (Janet Zand's

old company). Lastly, there is a very important patent formula that goes by

the English name of " Laryngitis Pills " . These pills are literally the size

of a grain of sand and can be take by children - one pill per year of age.

One must be very careful with this formula however, as it does have some

toxicity to it but it is great to fight infection and fever. This baby's

cough may be due to post nasal drip rather than from the lungs/bronchial.

After determining this, you can employ herbs accordingly. I hope this

helps - Matt

Hi!

For all thoes who has knowledge & experience in Pediatric Acupuncture I have a

question--

A baby of 8.5 months, is suffering from a slight ear infection! He has not

had the vaccenes (I mention this because of the HI posibility) The symptoms

known are- some fever, slght ear wax, bright eyes, and a slight cough from

time to time.

Does anyone have any ideas for treatment to share?

Thanks and G-od bless

Heat is entering Ear, ought to be from ST, LU may give Dryness, and

not Heat, especially in such a short history.

To differentiate, if the infection is in middle ear, ST is confirmed,

Heat rises in the gut, ascends to pharynx and Eustachian

tube to middle ear.

By another design which still incriminates ST, it's Heat will aggress on K

yin,

and cause a vulnerability in the ear, it's own domain.

If the infection is in external ear, LU Dryness is culprit. The slight cough

leads to this, and the bright eyes by a Ko aggression of Metal on Wood.

If ST is involved, one will look for a higher degree of temperature, if LU,

a slight

rise, because on is caused by Heat, other by Dryness.

If ST is the cause, look for irregular or over feeding, milk does not digest

and ferments

to cause Heat.

Anxious, inexperienced, or uncaring mothers involved in their own life more

than in

the child's, notoriously overfeed.

If Lu is the cause, look for a smoker's history in parents at the time

the child was conceived, or something worse.

One more indicator of Lu being the cause would be a telltale constipation.

Treatment:

Of course, no needles!

If ST is the cause, treat by regulating milk intake, it is not worthwhile

trying to reduce the fermentation in such a small child using points. Inside

of a day or

two, this will be gone, and then a proper and balanced intake can begin.

If the fever and infection and cough subside, one does not treat anything

else.

If LU is the cause and a maternal history is positive, there will be more of

a problem, the Dry condition of LU will prevail for years, and will need

active attention to be overcome.

For the present, if there is constipation, simply release that by massaging

the

mu points for LI, using the lightest touch.

When constipation is resolved, the ear infection and fever will abate.

HI Chanalee,

I haven't personally treated any babies but I just opened Bob Flaws book " a

handbook of TCM Pediatrics " to see what information he gives on ear

infections.

From the information you give here, it seams like it is an acute invasion of

wind heat, though you would need to check with other signs and symptoms.

I'll just summarise/copy a few things he says here...

If it¹s wind heat the guiding formula he uses is Shu Feng Qing Re Tang Jia

Jian

Acupuncture: (not sure about acupuncture in a baby)

For acute otitis media; Li4 St44

Local points: GB 20

If high fever bleed either or both: Shi Xuan and GV 14

For restlessness, Yin Tang

For chronic otitis media, and specifically after repetes antibiotic usage,

moxa CV 8 and needle St 36

Adjunctive treatments:

- First he proposes to alternate hot and cold compresses on the side of the

head of the affected ear; beginning with a hot compress to improve

circulation and then apply a cold compress to clear heat.

- You can also use just a hot compress soaked in a decoction of 60g of Ju

Hua and Pu Gong Ying.

-also you can use inner ear treatment... The simplest is warm roasted sesame

oil. He then gives a series of other heat clearing ear oil formula.

Let me know if you want me to email those to you too.

Hopefully that would help.

Let us know how you get on and what worked.

Regards

May

Hi Chanalee,

Sorry didn¹t have the time to read the whole chapter earlier, but there is a

few additional information Bob Flaws adds in his comments bit that I think

are quite important.

The previous information was mainly Chinese textbook information.

He then adds that most western children will need formula that would also

fortify the spleen and suplement the qi. He proposes the use of Xiao Chai Hu

Tang Jia Wei. I think Bluepoppy have a preparation in drops for children of

his proposed formula.

This formula will strenghten the spleen, eliminate dampness and stagnant

food from the stomach and intestines and clear heat and inflammation.

After the acute phase is over, he then prescribes a unmodified Xiao Chai

Tang for several months in order to continue supplementing the spleen,

harmonising the liver and spleen, clearing heat from the stomach and

intestins and therefore from the gallbladder channel locally in the region

of the ear and transform food and disperse accumulation.

This will prevent having recurrent ear ache scenarios.

Hope that makes sense.

I would like to concur with Matt's view. My teacher taught me that

this massage action encourages the production of saliva which is the

body's natural protection. I do this all the time when I feel a throat

problem coming on.

A great little book on the subject of child massage is " Tuina Masssage

for a healthier, brighter child " by Maria Mercati.
