Tom Tam's Healing System

Hi all,

I am in the process of reading Tom Tam's Healing System book which was

graciously lent to me by Brian (and which I now have on order), and

find it quite interesting. Here are some excerpts that might interest

other members who are seeking information and classes on Chinese

medical modalities such as Tuina, qigong, cupping, etc, combined with

herbs and acupuncture.

http://www.easternhealingcenter.com/tomtam/

" My diagnosis of sickness is different from TCM. TCM diagnosis is

based on Chi blockages detected by the pulse and tongue and not

physically felt. The TCM doctor needs a lot of experience and only

then can locate the Chi imbalance. Either the mind or a physical

blocage may cause Chi blockage. In my system, each blockage must be

physically felt when pressed. Different diseases have different

blockages. It is easy to find and touch the blockage from teh

patient's body. "

" The body may have one blockage or it may have many blockages. .. When

we treat the body, we require opening all of the blockages in the body

even if they are not related. Only when the body is without any

blockage can it then be free. "

" Generally in my treatments I use acupuncture because it is easy and

effective. Acupuncture can fill up the Chi easily and soften up the

blockage. " However, many times the blockage can be too big and the

muscle tissue too tight. When this happens, it can cause acupunture to

[be] less effective because the blockage is too big and tight for the

neddle to work and needs the aid of a physical force to open it. The

healing range of acupunture is limited, many illnesses cannt be helped

by acupuncture or the results show a low percentage of success. "

" The second most used therapy is Tui Na. It is a powerful method of

physical thereapy used to open blockages involving soft tissue. " .. In

my healing phislosophy, the Yin and Yang balance is due to a blockage.

This blockage can cause bio-electricity to rever to low voltage or

pass a wrong signal. After we have Chi Gong training, each blockage

can be felt by the Chi withour hand. ... With physical touch, we can

always feel the blockage in the patient's body. I like to combine TUin

Na therapy with all of my acupuncture patients I treat. Tuin Na is

good for diagnosing, and also easily opens bloakages " .

" The thirs therapy is Chi Gong. When I treat cancer patients I always

use Chi Gong therapy. It is a quick and easy way to replenish the

patient's Chi, which has been depleted by the damage of chemo and/or

radiation therapy. Chi Gong can do a good job of diagnosis and at the

same time it can be healing to the body. Some blockages are inside the

body and too deep to be touched. Tui Na cannot be used to release the

blocage in the brain and the organs inside, but many times Chi Gong

can achieve this job because the Chi can travel anywhere in the body. "

" Chinese herbs are a major part of TCM. Most Chinese doctors use it

more than anything else, but in my healing system I very rarely use

herbs. The only Chinese herb I use is from teh pattern formula,

because it is easy to use. "

There is lots more in this book including a discussion of the

non-meridian acupunture points that he uses around the spine. For me,

the book is fascinating.

Regards,

Rich

I received a treatment from tom tam at one point. What amazed me the

most was how accurately he could diagnose based on this system. I

gave him a main complaint to concentrate on, and after running his

hand above my spine (without touching the skin) he proceeded to find

all my other complaints.

Hi Brian,

What was most interesting to me was how similar Tam's " model " is in

comparison to the one that I have learned and adopted. The

tuina/qigong practitioner that I go to uses exactly the same model and

techniques.

The major difference is that Tam uses acupuncture. As he indicates, it

is relatively easy to use and is applicable in a great number of cases

where the " blockage " can be unblocked by the vital energy that is

stimulated by the acupuncture needling process. I do not use

acupuncture because I am not trained to use it and because I do not

find the need since for me the Tuina is sufficient and I do not mind

spending the time.

I intend to attend one of Tom Tam's seminars when I have an

opportunity because I am most interested in the technques he uses to

" loosen " the spine. I, like Tam, have found that almost all chronic

problems can be traced to some blockage in the Spine or Hara areas -

the Hara being the root of Consciousness and the Spine being the

physical conduit.

Let me know if you run across any other interestin material or

seminars. I have a strong interest in this area.
