Dear Group,

I read in the textbook " Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children " by Scott

and Barlow, that if acupuncture treatment is started before 3 years of age

practically all signs of Down's Syndrome can be eliminated.

I have to say that I was shocked by this, as the rest of the book does not

have any sensational claims.

Does any member of the group have experience of treating Down's Syndrome and

is it true that acupuncture is so effective at treating this condition?

Kind regards

Dermot

I would be equally amazed if AP can really make great changes in Down's

children, but please post to the List if you hear otherwise.

Acubriefs has no references to down's, but has one on mongolism.

Medline has 16072 hits for the profile

(downs-syndrome OR mongolism OR down's)

but has only 1 hit (the same as acubriefs, see below) for the profile

(downs-syndrome OR mongolism OR down's) AND acup*

J Tradit Chin Med. 1999 Dec;19(4):259-63. The effect of electroacupuncture on

auditory P300 potential in mongolism cases. Lai X, Feng S, Jin R, Zhang J.

Acupuncture Department of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese

Medicine. In treating children with mongolism (Down's syndrome) with

electroacupuncture, the latent period of P3 is shortened, which shows that the

cerebral reaction to external stimulus in classification, encoding and

recognition

is accelerated. Along with the elevated P3 amplitude, the cerebrum is more

capable of processing the external information, showing improvement of the

mental state. PMID: 10921128 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
