Hi all,

Therapy may save women undergoing surgery

The science correspondent in The Times, Mark Henderson, reports that

research in the United States has indicated that a technique known

as ablation therapy, in which cancer cells are destroyed using heat

or cold, may be a safe and effective alternative to a mastectomy for

women with breast cancer. Scientists have told a conference of the

Radiological Society of North America, in New York, that if further

trials of the procedure are successful, women with breast cancer may

soon be able to choose a form of therapy that neither leads to

breast removal or scarring, nor requires large doses of radiation.

Aspirin resistance

A short report in The Times states that according to research

presented to the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, a study at

Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital has found that nearly half

of stroke patients taking an aspirin a day were found to be " aspirin

resistant " - drawing the conclusion that aspirin is not as effective

in preventing strokes as previously thought.
