Does anyone have any advice? I have a patient who is experiencing the

following side-effects from taking statins to lower hereditiary high

cholesterol: mild buring sensation in the soles of both feet, intermittent

mild pain in his ankles and knees, and some mild muscle cramping.

He is willing to try herbal treatments in the future but wants to see how

effective the statin (Crestor) can be before he switches over to an

alternative method. In the meantime, he would like some relief from the

side-effects.

Best,

Steve

Statins work as enzyme metabolizers, in the blood, interstitial fluids

and intracellularly.

At some stage, reportedly rarely, they upset CoQ10 levels, which

particularly

predisposes the taker to a catch-all label " myopathies " , pathological states

in the muscles, to include cramping and a baker's list of things worse.

Thus in TCM orientation, one has pathology happening in:

Earth - muscles, the original focus fat

Metal Lung - controls Fluid in upper reaches of body

K Water - controls Fluid in lower reaches of body.

On a 5 E chart with Wood at apex, one can see a 'primary'

area of trouble at the beleaguered Earth, which does not nourish Metal as

the Son,

and which harasses Water, as the natural enemy who needs to be controlled.

If confirmed by checking out the tongue, the Hara, and the pulse, in that

order

one would then determine if this is an Flux illness or a Deficiency.

With this conformed one would treat:

As primary, Earth, a mix of ST - SP points.

As secondary, Water, simply in even mode, Water qi is at a premium here.

As secondary, also LU, also as even movement, because it is an intermediary.

A good needle prescription is as one suggested below:

SP 9 - Water point of Earth channel

K 3 - Earth point on Water channel

Both even movement, or very little movement.

UB 23 Shu of K - even movement or very little movement

UB 22 on right only - will kick into gear the 3 Cavities - 8 thread size

moxa.

Results: should have the symptoms mitigate or disappear by the 3 rd session.

Check to see if there is a Dai imbalance. Check also to see if both

shoulders

at level.

I can't help asking....why not try alternative treatments to see how

effective they will be before switching over to the statin?? Seems like a

no-brainer to me. Has he investigated policosinol? Try a google -- just for

fun and profit...er, savings.
