I have a deep interest in Folk medicine in general and in Asian folk medicines in particular. I got involved in this due to an illness of my own but as I find this subject fascinating in and of itself I hope to obtain much more from the group and perhaps contribute from time to time. I have some farmland in Thailand and grow several medicinal herbs and have discussed the same with various villagers whose knowledge has been passed down to them for many generations. Also, Thailand is unique in many ways. About 20 percent of the population is ethnically Chinese and there are Chinese medicine shops in every sizable town and city. Thai traditional medicine as well as Chinese traditional medicine is well accepted and coexists with western and Indian medicine without conflict. People recognize that western medicine has it's place as does Thai and Chinese herbal medicine. In fact the Thai govt. has a program to test and classify all folk medicine in thier country and where appropriate use it instead of expensive western drug based medicine. So far they have classified over 1,000 plants that can be used directly in place of western drug based medicine. I hope to learn more from the group and perhaps even grow more medicinals at our farm in Thailand. Thank you very much for your invitation, I look forward to some good reading and perhaps contributing my own two cents from time to time.
